Job summary

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an experienced Advanced Biomedical Scientist to join the Haematology and Coagulation Department as a Training Officer. You will lead training activities, support staff through IBMS Registration and Specialist Portfolios, and collaborate with senior scientific staff to develop services and staff progression.

The role requires HCPC registration, a minimum of three years post-registration experience and active CPD, with a focus on

Qualifications

  • HCPC approved Biomedical Science degree (BSc) or other HCPC approved degree/top ups
  • HCPC registered
  • Evidence of current CPD activities
  • MSc or equivalent level of knowledge in relevant discipline
  • Specialist portfolio in relevant discipline or equivalent level of knowledge/experience
  • Experience of working at band 6 level to include supervision/leadership and troubleshooting non-routine issues

Responsibilities

  • Lead and support training activities across the department and provide guidance to staff undertaking IBMS Registration Portfolios, Specialist Portfolios and apprenticeship programmes
  • Undertake staff appraisals and monitor training progress
  • Write, review and update SOPs, competency assessments and training materials to ensure compliance with accreditation requirements
  • Perform audits and contribute to quality improvement initiatives
  • Support day-to-day operational management of the department and act as a source of scientific and technical expertise
  • Based at Southampton General Hospital within the Haematology and Coagulation Department

Job description

Advanced Biomedical Scientist - Haematology & Coagulation including training officer responsibilities., You'll play a key role in maintaining high standards of training, quality and patient care whilst working closely with senior scientific staff, training officers and departmental managers. Reporting to the Section Manager, you'll collaborate with colleagues across Laboratory Medicine and the wider Trust to support service development, staff progression and continuous improvement., You'll lead and support training activities across the department, providing guidance to staff undertaking IBMS Registration Portfolios, Specialist Portfolios and apprenticeship programmes.You'll undertake staff appraisals, monitor training progress and work closely with departmental Training Officers, educational providers and external stakeholders.You'll write, review and update SOPs, competency assessments and training materials to ensure compliance with departmental and accreditation requirements.You'll perform audits, contribute to quality improvement initiatives and support the continual development of our quality management system.You'll undertake a range of routine and specialist Haematology and Coagulation investigations and contribute to the introduction and validation of new procedures and equipment.You'll support the day-to-day operational management of the department and act as a source of scientific and technical expertise for colleagues.
You'll need to be HCPC registered and hold current IBMS Membership or Fellowship. You'll need a minimum of three years' post-registration experience and be able to demonstrate active continuing professional development, including a two-year CPD summary. You'll need experience of supporting, mentoring or training staff and a genuine enthusiasm for workforce development. You'll need excellent communication, organisational and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams. You'll need experience of quality management activities, including audits, SOP review and service improvement. You'll be expected to work flexibly to meet the needs of the service and participate in departmental rotas as required., This role includes significant responsibility for training, education and competency management and is ideally suited to someone who enjoys developing others.Previous experience supporting IBMS portfolios, apprenticeships or acting as a Training Officer would be advantageous.The post is based at Southampton General Hospital within the Haematology and Coagulation Department.Professional registration, qualification checks and pre-employment screening will be required in line with NHS employment standards.
