Job description
Role Overview

The postholder will work as part of the team to ensure that adult patients are admitted to hospital in a timely and efficient manner, making the process as smooth as possible for patients and clinicians.

The role also involves providing 12‑month maternity cover on the Surgical Admissions Team at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust, requiring flexibility with core hours of 8 am to 6 pm.

Key Responsibilities
  • Cover all specialties and support other areas during annual leave or other absences.
  • Lead developments in the organization of elective admissions and identify shortfalls in elective slot provision.
  • Book elective patients within the National 18‑week target and cancer targets, and co‑ordinate patients on the waiting list for elective surgery within the designated specialty.
  • Schedule elective admissions by contacting patients, offering admission dates and agreeing on dates.
  • Use the 18‑week Referral to Treatment guidance to manage the elective patient journey and develop expert knowledge of RTT.
  • Liaise with clinicians to ensure effective organization and scheduling of theatre lists.
  • Attend weekly PTL meetings with the Service Manager to ensure theatre lists are booked to maximum capacity, proactively filling late cancellations.
  • Maintain a good understanding of the Trust’s Access Policy and ensure booking processes remain in line with the policy.
  • Anticipate potential breaches and coordinate escalation with the Service Manager to seek solutions.
  • Conduct regular validation of waiting lists.
  • Make appointments for patients’ pre‑assessment for surgery in line with patients’ needs or as directed by medical/clinical staff guidance.
Required Skills and Experience
  • Excellent customer care skills, friendly and flexible.
  • Strong communication skills and good keyboard skills.
  • Experience dealing with the general public and administrative experience.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and serve as a primary point of contact for patients and their relatives.
  • Basic understanding of elective surgery access targets and the ability to contribute to meeting those targets.
