Job summary

Unum UK is seeking a Nearly/Newly Qualified Actuary to join the Actuarial Risk and Capital team in a hybrid arrangement. You will analyse experience, set assumptions, and help calibrate capital stresses, delivering insightful reports and partnering with Finance and Risk.

This role offers exposure to Life Insurance, General Insurance or Pensions, with senior stakeholders and opportunities to mentor actuarial students. You will develop your career in a collaborative environment.

Qualifications

  • Nearly qualified actuary with 1–2 exams remaining or a newly qualified actuary with up to 3 years' post-qualification experience.
  • Experience gained within Life Insurance, General Insurance or Pensions.
  • Knowledge of Solvency UK and the wider UK regulatory framework.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret complex data.
  • Experience of actuarial modelling, assumption setting, experience analysis or capital management activities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to engage senior stakeholders.
  • Collaborative approach with mentoring or supporting actuarial students.
  • Balance strong technical understanding with commercial awareness and practical decision making.
  • Curious mindset with a drive for continuous improvement.
  • Strong organisational skills and ability to deliver across multiple priorities.
  • Interest in a long-term career within Group Risk and life insurance market.

Responsibilities

  • Produce high-quality reporting and analysis on experience investigations, assumptions and capital outcomes.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of risk and capital methodologies, processes and controls.
  • Support change initiatives and capital-related developments across the business.
  • Collaborate with Finance, Risk and the wider organisation to deliver actuarial insight and business value.
  • Present complex actuarial findings clearly to stakeholders, including senior management.
  • Provide guidance and support to actuarial students to develop future talent.
  • Continuously challenge existing approaches and identify opportunities to improve methodologies.

The role
What will you be doing?

As a Nearly/Newly Qualified Actuary within our Actuarial Risk and Capital team, you'll play a key role in helping Unum understand, manage and optimise its capital position. You'll work with a wide range of stakeholders across Finance and the wider business, analysing experience, supporting capital modelling and helping shape the assumptions that underpin key business decisions. This is an excellent opportunity for an actuary looking to broaden their expertise, take ownership of meaningful work and develop their career within a supportive and collaborative team environment.

We're looking for a collaborative and commercially minded actuary who enjoys solving complex problems, challenging assumptions and delivering high-quality work. Whether you're approaching qualification or have already qualified, you'll bring strong technical capability alongside the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.

You'll Ideally Have
  • Be a nearly qualified actuary with 1-2 exams remaining, or a newly qualified actuary with up to 3 years' post-qualified experience.
  • Experience gained within Life Insurance, General Insurance or Pensions, with an interest in applying your skills within a new environment.
  • Knowledge of Solvency UK and the wider UK regulatory framework.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and communicate meaningful insights.
  • Experience of actuarial modelling, assumption setting, experience analysis or capital management activities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage confidently with senior stakeholders.
  • A collaborative approach, with experience supporting, mentoring or working closely with actuarial students and colleagues.

Location

Hybrid working. 3 days in office, 2 days from home. From office location in Dorking.
