We're on a journey to build a workforce reflective of our Borough.
We are committed to fostering diverse teams where everybody can bring their authentic selves to work and feel that they belong. If you want to work for a Council where everybody is encouraged to meet their full potential and make a difference in our neighbourhoods, we would love to hear from you!
This exciting role is part of the Highways and Network Management service which is part of the Environment Directorate.
As an Active Travel Officer you will be supporting the team as a whole but mainly focusing on the active travel, walking/cycling, and school travel plan side of the service. We aim for every school in the borough to have a functioning school travel plan so your role would include working with the schools to support them with this and encourage them to update their Travel Plans annually. The purpose of a school travel plan is to increase walking and cycling to school to reduce the amount of cars around the school gates creating a safer and healthier environment for the pupils, staff and residents. There are a number of initiatives that schools can take part in to achieve this.
You will exhibit the BeWigan behaviours and have experience of working in road safety and active travel education.
You will be an effective communicator with experience with communicating at a variety of levels, influencing and negotiation skills and engaging with schools and the public.
You will have excellent decision-making skills, be able to prioritise workloads, be self-organised and able to manage competing workloads, as well as showing initiative and creativity in your approach to task completion, on time and with accuracy.
Wigan Council has been voted ‘Overall Council of the Year’ at the APSE (Association for Public Service Excellence) Awards. We are signed up to the Greater Manchester Continuous Service Commitment ensuring that your service will be continuous or 'unbroken' between the supporting organisations.
The Progress with Unity plan is a place movement for change for the next decade, bringing a new era for Wigan Borough. It draws on the strengths of our individual organisations, recognising that together we can achieve much more for our communities by delivering on our 2 place missions; create fair opportunities for all children, families, residents and businesses and make our towns and neighbourhoods flourish for those who live and work in them.
The Network Management service plays a key role in managing congestion, improving road safety and active travel, supporting new development and allowing residents, businesses and visitors to travel safely around the borough and connect into the wider region.
We are enthusiastic team who are committed to continual improvement and to providing the best possible service to our residents. We will provide you with the support you need to do your job and learning opportunities to support your professional development within the organisation.
Here at Wigan, we are proud to support flexible working patterns, when the service can accommodate this. We also take a blended approach to where we work, depending on the work we do. This may include working from home, the office, or the community.
