Job summary

Actemium Automation Huddersfield is seeking a capable Software Controls Engineer to design, develop and commission PLC, HMI/SCADA and related automation software for industrial projects. You will work with project engineers and site teams to deliver projects on time and to specification.

You will have hands-on responsibility with opportunities to progress technically and into project leadership, supporting manufacturing and process sectors from Huddersfield.

Qualifications

• Relevant engineering qualification (HNC, HND, degree or equivalent) or proven practical experience in controls engineering.
• Strong experience programming PLCs and HMIs/SCADA; familiarity with Mitsubishi and Schneider Electric platforms is desirable.
• Good understanding of electrical control circuits, I/O, and industrial communication protocols.
• Experience with commissioning and fault-finding on site.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to prepare clear technical reports and interact professionally with clients.
• Organised, proactive and able to work independently or as part of a project team.
• Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to client sites as required.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop and test PLC control logic (e.g. Mitsubishi and Schneider Electric) and associated function blocks.
• Develop HMI/SCADA applications and visualisation (such as WinCC, Wonderware, Ignition or equivalent).
• Perform FAT/SAT activities, commissioning and on-site support for automated systems.
• Integrate industrial drives, motion control and fieldbus/industrial Ethernet networks.
• Produce clear technical documentation, software revision records and configuration backups.
• Work with electrical and mechanical teams to support panel wiring, cable schedules and installation checks.
• Ensure compliance with safety standards, client specifications and company processes.
• Provide technical support to clients and colleagues, including training and handover documentation.

Software Controls Engineer
