Job description

An international organisation operating within a highly regulated, capital-intensive infrastructure sector is seeking a qualified Accountant to join its London-based finance team.

This broad accounting role will support statutory and regulatory reporting, financial controls, period-end close activities, external audits and reporting to shareholders, lenders and government bodies. The successful candidate will prepare, analyse and submit financial information in accordance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and applicable UK statutory requirements.

The position offers exposure to a significant long-term infrastructure programme operating within an evolving regulatory environment.

Role Context

This is a replacement position within a finance team comprising four professionals and a Statutory and Regulatory Accounting Manager. The wider team includes an Accounts Payable specialist and two Statutory and Regulatory Accountants.

This position acts as the team’s accounting generalist and manages a broad range of financial processes. Its remit includes monthly, quarterly and annual closing activities, trial-balance review, intercompany accounting, account reconciliations and the preparation of profit and loss, balance-sheet and financial-statement reporting.

Because the business operates within a regulated environment, the role also has responsibility for additional financial submissions to government bodies, the relevant economic regulator, lenders, shareholders and the wider international group.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage day-to-day accounting, reporting and finance activities in accordance with internal controls, group policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual profit and loss statements, balance sheets and supporting financial information.
  • Review and reconcile the monthly trial balance, investigating and resolving discrepancies.
  • Support the monthly, quarterly and year-end financial close processes.
  • Calculate and record depreciation, decommissioning and other relevant accounting provisions.
  • Review and reconcile capital expenditure and asset-capitalisation reports.
  • Perform monthly cost allocations and ensure costs are recorded appropriately.
  • Prepare monthly reconciliations and supporting schedules for designated balance-sheet and profit-and-loss accounts.
  • Manage and reconcile intercompany balances and transactions.
  • Prepare accurate and timely reports for the parent company, shareholders and wider international group.
  • Coordinate monthly, quarterly and annual reporting to regulators, government bodies and lenders.
  • Prepare the annual regulatory reporting pack and ensure all submissions meet agreed deadlines.
  • Ensure management and regulatory reports reconcile to the underlying accounting records.
  • Draft statutory and regulatory financial statements and respond to related queries.
  • Support the development and implementation of accounting systems, reporting processes and financial controls.
  • Maintain effective accounting policies and procedures that meet group, regulatory and project-finance requirements.
  • Help ensure adherence to internal governance standards and control frameworks.
  • Support statutory, regulatory and external audit processes, including preparing schedules and responding to auditor queries.
  • Work closely with internal teams and external stakeholders to deliver accurate, compliant and timely financial reporting.
Candidate Profile
  • Approximately four to six years of relevant accounting and audit experience.
  • Current or previous experience with a top-tier audit or accountancy firm is essential. Candidates from the Big Four, BDO or Grant Thornton will be considered.
  • Professionally qualified as an ACA, CA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent; candidates approaching qualification may also be considered where their experience is particularly relevant.
  • Strong knowledge of IFRS and UK statutory accounting and reporting requirements.
  • Experience preparing or auditing statutory financial statements.
  • Experience working within a corporate, international or group-reporting environment.
  • Exposure to a regulated industry is advantageous but not essential.
  • Experience in energy, infrastructure, utilities or another capital-intensive sector would be beneficial.
  • Knowledge of technical accounting areas such as financial instruments, hedge accounting, debt, leases, fixed assets and decommissioning provisions is desirable.
  • Experience using a large enterprise resource planning or financial accounting system, ideally SAP.
  • Advanced Excel skills and confidence working with complex financial data.
  • Strong organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to meet multiple reporting deadlines.
  • Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to producing accurate work.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to develop effective relationships with colleagues, auditors, advisers and other internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proactive, adaptable and solutions-focused approach.
