Job summary

A local charity in Dover is seeking a part-time Accountant to support the Director with financial compliance and reporting. You will be involved in payroll, managing budgets, and providing financial information for funding applications. Ideal candidates will have relevant accounting qualifications, experience with Sage software, and strong communication skills. Job Description

The Accountant will support the Director with the financial requirements of running of the charity, including ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements relating to Charity Law, payroll requirements and fundraising, in conjunction with Treasurer, Director and Trustees.

Primary Duties and responsibilities
  • Managepayroll, pension and HMRC administration.
  • Produce monthly salary breakdown, by funder, and enter journals onto Sage software.
  • Receive, record and pay volunteer and staff expense claims, coding to the correct project and funder.
  • Produce and provide explanation of all financial reports, as required, to the Director, Chair and Trustees
  • Produce and maintain the budgets for each of the funding streams for Samphire making sure that each budget is in line with the original bid.
  • Provide accurate financial information to the Director for funder’s reports and funding applications
  • Support the Director and Trustees withfinancial reporting and board papers
  • To undertake such mandatory training as is required by the Director in the first 3 months
  • Ensure compliance with all charity and statutory financial regulations.
  • Support the development of financial systems and processes to ensure on-going overall efficiency
  • Receive, check, and process all invoices and income receipts
  • Record all bank transactions using Sage Line 50 software, ensuring each is allocated against the relevant department budget and the correct bank account.
  • Maintain a robust paper trail of all transactions for audit purposes with regular reconciliation with bank account statements.
  • Prepareyear-end accountsand liaise with external auditors

Qualifications and Qualities
Education/Training
  • AAT L1-3, Part-Qualified Management Accounting or at least one year experience in a relevant role
  • AAT or Management Accounting part-qualification – or qualified by experience
  • Working knowledge of Sage accounting and payroll software
  • Relevant Charity Finance Training including HMRC Gift aid - preferred
Experience
  • 1 year or more in a relevant role, paid or voluntary
  • Budget production and monitoring
  • Experience preparing year-end accounts and working with auditors.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft office suite with particular emphasis on Excel and Word
  • Knowledge/experience of a multi-project organisation desirable
  • Management accounting and financial reporting desirable
Knowledge and skills
Essential
  • Excellent working knowledge of production and maintenance of financial /payroll software including Sage financial software and Excel spreadsheets
  • Understanding of Charity Commission compliance
  • General understanding of budget production to support grant applications and management of spend to budget for grants awarded
  • Effective communication and listening skills, including the ability to communicate with a wide range of people
  • Ability to work on own initiative, organising and prioritising a workload
  • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills
  • Commitment to confidentially and GDPR compliance
  • Sensitivity to other cultures and awareness of cultural differences.

  • Experience in fund raising and Gift Aid management/optimisation.
  • Experience of immigration, race equality or human rights settings.
  • Experience of working in a multicultural environment
  • Awareness of issues with people with NRPF condition, benefit entitlements and community care support for people with various immigration statuses
Working Conditions
  • The post holder is employed by Samphire’s Management Committee.
  • 18.5 hours per week; This is flexible with Mondays required for team meetings
  • Flexible Hybrid working.
  • The appointment is subject to a minimum 6 months probationary period
  • Immediate start available, with a handover from the current Accountant to ensure a smooth transition.
  • The successful applicant may be expected to work flexibly in the best interests of the organisation, with occasional evening, weekend, and overtime hours to accommodate activities such as Committee meetings and representing the organisation at public events.
  • There is no overtime pay.Time Off In Lieu is offered for hours worked (by agreement) beyond those contracted.
