Job summary

Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is seeking an Undergraduate Medical Education Manager to lead the delivery of clinical skills teaching and simulations for MBChB and Aston University students across Paediatrics placements within the Trust.

Job overview

As part of a multi-professional team, led by the Academy Manager, the post holder will help plan, organise, implement, and evaluate the delivery of clinical skills training and simulations for the Undergraduate Medical Education Team. The post holder will also provide clinical on-the-job teaching and supervision of University of Birmingham MBChB students and Aston University students who will be rotating through specialist placements in Paediatrics within Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust.

The post holder will also function as a specialist resource for other healthcare professionals within the Trust and promote high-quality care for patients within the clinical areas.

Main duties of the job

• To help plan, organise, implement, and evaluate the University of Birmingham’s MBChB curriculum in the clinical teaching academy (CTA), as well as to assist the Lead for Aston Medical School's clinical placements and teaching when required.
• To help plan, organise, implement, and evaluate the University of Birmingham's curriculum, as well as Aston Medical Schools curriculum when required.
• To help run and teach clinical skills sessions for Medical/PA Students both in the Manor Learning and Conference Centre and in the clinical areas.
• To actively participate in the Medical Student MBChB OSCE’s.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

• Organisation and delivery of teaching of clinical medical/PA students (e.g. bedside teaching, small group teaching and simulation) ensuring this meets the learning objectives set by medical school.
• Supporting the medical undergraduate teaching programme with course development, evaluation and co-ordination of the teaching programme, in conjunction with the Head of Academy.
• To contribute to the organisation of student clinical examinations and assessments.
• To support students in pastoral role and to signpost and elevate as necessary.
• To liaise with staff in the medical school and Trust as appropriate, including clinical colleagues,undergraduate co-ordinators, teaching fellows in other Trusts and medical school education developers.
• To undergo training in teaching methods as agreed with the Head of Academy (Postgraduate Certificate in Education for Health Professionals, unless already completed).
• To be familiar with the curriculum and to be available to facilitate student’s self-directed learning.
• To ensure that clinical practice is up to date and to undertake a programme of continued professional development with clinical commitments appropriate to the development of specialist clinical skills, attendance at clinics, ward rounds etc. as appropriate).
• To undertake quality improvement and/or research depending on the candidate’s interest.
• To comply with all relevant Trust policies and procedure.

Qulaifications

• First level Registration in Adult/Paediatric Nursing
• Previous teaching/mentorship experience
• Evidence of multi-professional working
• Completion of a recognised teaching qualification. E.g. GIC
• Resuscitation Council UK ILS provider
• Advanced Life Support Training

Knowledge and Experience

• Substantial & recent experience of caring for ED/AMU/Surgical patients within an acute healthcare setting
• Demonstration of professional behavior and effective team working within clinical environment
• Evidence of teaching junior colleagues
• Evidence of multi-disciplinary teaching
• Experience of teaching undergraduates and/or understanding the standards required of a graduating medical student
• Experience in patient emergency simulations
• Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively
• Good time management and organisational skills
• Appropriate Immigration Status
• Sufficient Information Technology skills, able to work with Microsoft Office software
• Commitment to undertake PG Cert in Medical Education during post
