Job description

Applications are invited from Police staff members for the role of the ‘Abnormal Loads Officer’ which is an interesting and diverse role working within Joint Specialist Operations.

An Abnormal load is a large or heavy load that needs to be transported on a road. Notifications are sent to Norfolk and Suffolk Police for the Abnormal Loads Officer to assess and then either approve or work with the hauliers and Police partners to plan and escort the vehicle and load movement.

The purpose of the Abnormal Loads Officer is to review, administer and authorise the movements of abnormal loads on the roads of Norfolk and Suffolk. Ensuring compliance with legislation, maintaining road safety and supporting hauliers with their business requirements and the local economy.

The Abnormal Loads Officer:

  • should have in-depth knowledge of the legislation relating to the movement of Abnormal Loads (training provided)
  • should have a good working knowledge of their own Police Force’s road and also the surrounding networks
  • should be able to visit locations or survey routes of proposed movements if required
  • should risk assess every proposed movement
  • should co-ordinate requests for escorting loads through the County with the appropriate line manager or supervisor
  • should actively participate and advise in future roadwork’s planning and consultations
  • should maintain records and information of roadworks or events that may interfere with abnormal load movement

It is essential that the applicants meet the following criteria:

  1. Previous experience of undertaking administrative support and maintaining accurate records
  2. Proven organisational skills with the ability to effectively organise and prioritise own workload and operational demands to meet deadlines
  3. Demonstrate excellent verbal communication and customer service skills with the ability to retain a clear professional approach with staff/officers at all levels
  4. Good numeracy, literacy, keyboard skills and working knowledge of Microsoft office suite
  5. Ability to travel

It is desirable that the applicants meet the following criteria:

  1. Previous knowledge of abnormal loads procedures
  2. Knowledge and use of mapping software
  3. Good geographical knowledge of Norfolk and Suffolk
