Job Description
We are seeking a reliable and professional 7.5 tonne driver to join our logistics team based in Middleton, Greater Manchester. The successful candidate will be responsible for the safe and timely transportation of goods across various destinations within the North West and further afield as required. This role requires adherence to all relevant health and safety regulations and company procedures to ensure the secure delivery and collection of consignments.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate and drive a 7.5 tonne vehicle safely and legally in compliance with all relevant road traffic laws and company policies.
- Load and unload goods carefully, ensuring correct handling to prevent damage.
- Plan routes effectively to meet delivery schedules and optimise fuel consumption.
- Carry out daily vehicle safety checks, reporting any defects or maintenance requirements promptly.
- Maintain accurate records of deliveries, collections and mileage using manual or electronic systems.
- Ensure all cargo is secured correctly in the vehicle to prevent shifting or damage during transit.
- Communicate professionally with customers and colleagues to confirm delivery instructions and resolve any issues.
- Adhere to company policies relating to timekeeping, uniform standards and conduct at all times.
- Support warehouse and logistics teams with additional duties as required, including assisting with stock handling and documentation.
Required Qualifications
- Valid full United Kingdom driving licence with category C1 entitlement suitable for 7.5 tonne vehicles.
- Digital tachograph card and familiarity with its operation.
- Good level of physical fitness to manage manual handling tasks associated with loading and unloading.
- Basic numeracy and literacy skills for record keeping and communication purposes.
Experience
- Proven experience driving 7.5 tonne vehicles within the logistics or distribution sector.
- Experience of route planning and time management to meet tight delivery schedules.
- Familiarity with vehicle maintenance checks and reporting procedures.
Knowledge and Skills
- Comprehensive understanding of United Kingdom road safety regulations and transport legislation.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Basic IT skills, including use of handheld devices or smartphones for delivery tracking.
- Good problem-solving abilities to handle unexpected issues during deliveries.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience within a fast-paced logistics or supply chain environment.
- Additional driving qualifications such as CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) for drivers.
- Knowledge of manual handling regulations and safe lifting techniques.
Working Conditions
- The role involves working full-time hours on a contract basis, including early mornings from 0200 and weekends as required.
- Work is carried out predominantly outdoors and involves driving in various weather conditions.
- Manual handling of goods is a regular part of the job; appropriate training and equipment are provided.
- The post-holder is required to comply with all health and safety policies and procedures at all times.
