Job Purpose
- Work in the following areas: Civil Litigation, Housing.
- Provide advice, draft correspondence and documents to support Lawyers and Senior Lawyers.
- Prepare cases for hearings and manage a heavy caseload.
- Provide advocacy in routine cases.
Principal Accountabilities and Responsibilities
- Undertake legal and technical tasks within a specialist area, including:
- Interviewing clients and witnesses, drafting statements, preparing documents for courts and tribunals (applications, statements of case, draft orders, pleadings).
- Drafting correspondence, documents, notices, orders, giving written and telephone advice.
- Representing the council in court.
- Take notes at hearings and conferences with Counsel.
- Instruct counsel.
- Conduct research.
- Handle correspondence.
- Manage a routine legal case load.
- Attend court, tribunals or public inquiries as an advocate.
- Assist and support other members of staff.
- Prepare bundles for court hearings in accordance with Practice Directions.
- Keep up to date with new and proposed legislation, cases and developments; give basic advice as required.
- Keep senior staff informed of important issues affecting case progress.
- Conduct searches of the Probate Registry, Land Registry, Office of Public Guardian, etc., as required.
- Use information technology appropriately.
- Adhere to safeguarding, customer care, equal opportunities, information governance, data protection, health and safety, emergency planning & awareness policies.
- Embed environmental sustainability into work, supporting Brent becoming carbon‑neutral by 2030.
- Undertake any other duties commensurate with this post’s responsibility level.
Person Specification

- Qualifications and Professional Membership requirements
- Law degree or substantial experience working in a legal department.
- Knowledge
- Knowledge of the law and practice relating to Civil Litigation.
- Knowledge of the law and practice relating to Housing.
- Experience
- Significant experience of administrative work in an office dealing with correspondence, filing, preparing documents and using IT systems.
- Skills and Abilities
- Good presentation skills, able to communicate clearly and concisely in writing and orally.
- Ability to provide services consistent with the Council’s equal opportunities policies.
- Accurate data entry skills.
- Good organisational skills.
- Ability to prepare cases for hearings and manage a heavy caseload.
- Ability to undertake routine litigation.
