Job description

Due to the expansion of Barnsley Hospitals clinical services at The Glassworks and The Alhambra, Barnsley Facilities Services is seeking an Estates and Facilities Maintenance Operative. This important role will support the smooth running of our new health facilities, helping to ensure that the environment remains safe, clean, and welcoming for patients, staff, and visitors.

Main duties of the job

We are seeking a reliable and proactive individual to support a wide range of maintenance and caretaker duties at the Health on the High Street and Community Diagnostic Centre located in the Barnsley Town Centre.

Key Responsibilities:

Carry out daily building inspections and routine statutory maintenance

Manage deliveries, stock rotation, and storage

Oversee waste management and segregation in line with regulations

Work closely with maintenance technicians, supervisors, and other staff groups to ensure smooth operations

Maintain accurate service records and documentation

Provide support across multiple sites, including Health on the High Street (Alhambra), Community Diagnostic Centre (Glassworks), Barnsley Hospital, and neighbouring facilities as required

This role offers variety, hands-on experience, and opportunities for on-the-job training while contributing to the safe and efficient running of hospital services.

Qualifications
  • Have a basic understanding of electrical, mechanical, building and joinery services.
  • NVQ Level 2 or equivalent experience in building/facilities trade
Skills and abilities
  • Be able to work unsupervised
  • Be able to assist all skilled tradesmen
  • Be capable of keeping up to date in house record
  • Be able to communicate with other members of staff and contractors
  • Ability to travel effectively between sites in the Barnsley Health Community
  • Be able to undertake unsociable hours working
  • Must be willing to work at all hospital sites within the Trust
Experience
  • Have previous experience in engineering/ building/ joinery maintenance
  • Working at heights
  • Working in confined spaces
  • Have previously worked in hospital surroundings
