Description and Main Purpose of Job:

The Third Engineer is responsible for the safe, efficient, and environmentally compliant operation, monitoring, and maintenance of assigned machinery and equipment, under the direction of the Staff Engineer. The position includes engine room watchkeeping duties, planned and corrective maintenance, recording and reporting of technical activities, and contribution to safe vessel operations in compliance with Company procedures, statutory requirements, and the Chief Engineer’s standing orders.

Key Responsibilities

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

Perform engine room watchkeeping duties as Engine Officer of the Watch (EOOW) during the assigned watch periods, normally 00:00 – 04:00 and 12:00 – 16:00, or as otherwise instructed by the Staff Engineer or Chief Engineer. In addition to watchkeeping duties, carry out maintenance, inspections, troubleshooting and repairs of assigned machinery, in coordination with the Staff Engineer, supervise the motorman on watch and ensure proper task execution and global housekeeping, in accordance with Shipsure and applicable work and rest hour regulations. Carry out a complete machinery round before taking over the watch and thereafter at suitable intervals during the watch, in accordance with safe operating practices and standing orders. Maintain a proper and continuous engine room watch in compliance with applicable regulations, including MARPOL, SOLAS, VMS, and all relevant shipboard procedures and instructions. Ensure safe, orderly, and efficient operation of machinery and engine room spaces, using good seamanship, sound engineering practice, and safe working methods. Complete the engine logbook during the watch and ensure it is kept accurate and up to date, in line with the vessel’s procedures and instructions. Prepare a proper handover for the relieving engineer and provide complete information on machinery status, defects, outstanding work, and any operational concerns. Follow the Chief Engineer’s standing orders and all instructions issued by the Staff Engineer. Perform any additional duties as may reasonably be required by the Master or the Chief Engineer. Maintain high standards of housekeeping and cleanliness in all assigned areas, ensuring a safe and orderly working environment, and proper use, care and storage of tools, equipment and materials. Record all maintenance activities, inspections, defects, work orders and relevant technical observations in Shipsure. Monitor condition and operating performance of assigned equipment, identify abnormalities, and report defects, failures, non-conformities, near misses, and hazardous occurrences promptly to the Staff Engineer. Maintain spare parts control for assigned equipment, including stock monitoring, requisitions, consumption records, and preparation of spare parts orders when required. Conduct at least one full physical inventory per contract for assigned spare parts and equipment, or as otherwise required by company procedures. Ensure that all operations are carried out in compliance with safety, security, environmental, and quality requirements, including the correct use of PPE, risk assessments, toolbox talks, permits to work, isolation procedures, and pollution prevention measures. The Second Engineer may be responsible for the operation, maintenance, and safe repair of the following systems and equipment, as assigned:

• Potable and distilled water systems, including production (reverse osmosis), remineralization, treatment, storage, distribution and consumption monitoring
• Potable water quality management and USPH compliance, including sampling, analysis, disinfection, calibration, system monitoring and record keeping
• Compressed air systems, including starting air, general service and breathing air systems, with associated compressors, dryers, receivers and distribution networks
• Pneumatically operated equipment, including valves and pumps (fixed and portable)
• Fire-fighting systems, including main fire system and water mist system (Hi-Fog), in coordination with the First Safety Officer
• Emergency diesel generator, including its associated auxiliary systems
• Ballast system, including pumps, piping, valves and ballast water treatment plant
• Watertight and weathertight doors
• Quick Closing Valves
• Backflow preventers
• Workshop machinery and equipment, including machine tools and associated facilities
