Job summary

Midland Metro Ltd in the West Midlands is recruiting a Fleet Engineer to lead the technical management of the CAF Urbos 3 tram fleet, ensuring safe, dependable and high-performing services for communities. This role owns fleet performance and drives reliability across our expanding network.

Based at Wednesbury Depot, the position offers £56,000 per year plus benefits and a pension. You will work with OEMs and engineering partners to deliver improvements and adapt to operational needs.

Qualifications

• 5+ years in a technical engineering role.
• Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills across mechanical, electrical, electronic, hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
• Experience with rolling stock in a depot environment.
• Background in reliability improvement, maintenance optimisation, or engineering change/modifications.
• In-depth knowledge of rolling stock systems and technologies.

Responsibilities

• Lead day-to-day technical management of the tram fleet.
• Own fleet safety, performance and reliability.
• Ensure in-service failures are reported, investigated, tracked and resolved.
• Analyse fleet data to identify trends and drive improvements.
• Enhance maintenance regime, instructions and documents.
• Manage tram modification and enhancement projects.
• Oversee the fleet risk register and contribute to risk strategies.
• Collaborate with vehicle manufacturer and OEMs.
• Provide flexible support including evenings, nights and weekends.

We're now recruiting for a

Fleet Engineer to support the technical management of our CAF Urbos 3 tram fleet ensuring safe, dependable and high-performing services for our communities.

This isn't your everyday engineering role. It's a unique opportunity to take ownership of fleet performance and reliability at a critical point in our journey.

As our Fleet Engineer, you'll be responsible for:

• Leading the day-to-day technical management of the tram fleet.
• Taking ownership of fleet safety, performance and reliability.
• Ensuring in-service failures are reported, investigated, tracked and resolved.
• Analysing fleet data to identify trends, prevent failures and drive continuous improvement.
• Enhancing the fleet maintenance regime, including instructions, procedures and associated documents.
• Managing tram modification and enhancement projects.
• Overseeing the fleet risk register and contributing to risk management strategies.
• Building strong working relationships with the vehicle manufacturer and system OEMs.
• Providing flexible support - including occasional evenings, nights and weekends where needed.

To be successful, you'll bring:

• 5+ years' experience in a technical engineering role.
• Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills across complex mechanical, electrical, electronic, hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
• Experience working with rolling stock in a depot environment.
• Background in one or more of: reliability improvement, maintenance optimisation, or engineering change/modifications.
• In-depth knowledge of rolling stock systems and technologies.
• Familiarity with rail industry standards, ideally those relevant to light rail.
