Responsibilities

Job description

As part of our prison support team you will help maintain a safe and efficient working environment. The role involves a variety of physical tasks, including lifting, standing, walking and lone working during day and night shifts. Transport to the site is normally by personal vehicle – a driving licence is beneficial but not essential.

Key Responsibilities
  • Gate duties – secure entry and exit of staff, visitors and vehicles, conduct searches and escort vehicles/contractors around the site.
  • Control room – operate prison radio system, monitor CCTV, report suspicious activity.
  • Visitor and mail handling – welcome visitors, escort them, process incoming mail and parcels.
  • Night duties – ensure cell doors are locked and prisoners are accounted for.
  • Reception – photograph prisoners and process prisoners' property and parcels.
  • Prisoner supervision – supervise prisoners, exchange clothing and property, assist officers escort prisoners around the prison.
  • Food delivery – deliver and collect food via trolley or electric tug vehicle.
  • Driving duties – collect mail from the local sorting office, lifting heavy sacks as required.
  • Telephone – monitor personal identification number (PIN) phone system, maintain records of PIN phone requests.
  • Procedures and protocol – understand and follow national and local policies, respond appropriately to incidents and emergencies.
Qualifications & Personal Skills

There are no formal qualifications required. The role requires good judgement, common sense, responsibility and a strong sense of teamwork.

Working Conditions

The position is 37 hours per week, including night shifts, evenings, weekends and bank/public holidays on a rolling shift pattern. Travel to the site is usually by personal vehicle.
