Job summary

Randstad Education in Godalming is recruiting a dedicated 1:1 SEN Teaching Assistant to support students aged 7-19 with diverse needs, including autism and NVLD. You will work 1:1, delivering core subject support with an emphasis on communication and independence in a well-resourced school environment.

The role requires Maths and English GCSEs (or equivalent) and a proven track record with SEN. DBS clearance and right to work in the UK are essential; hours are 08:30–16:00, Monday to Friday.

  • Utilise multi-sensory communication techniques (signs, Makaton, symbols) to support non-verbal learners.
  • Offer emotional guidance to help manage anxiety and develop self-regulation.
  • Collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team and engage in ongoing professional development.

1:1 SEN Teaching Assistant

(Grade S3, scale point 20.1 - 23; FTE £28,637.00 - £30,484.00; Actual: £22,137.77 - £23,565.59 based on 32 hours per week)

Are you an experienced SEN professional seeking a rewarding next step in your career? We are currently looking for a dedicated Teaching Assistant for an outstanding school based in Godalming. You will be working 1:1 with students aged 7-19 who have a range of complex needs, including Autism and Non-verbal Learning Disability (NVLD).

This is an ideal opportunity for a dependable, seasoned practitioner looking to leverage established skills in a well-resourced environment. The school offers access to a wide range of qualified therapists (including Speech and Language Specialists) and outstanding facilities-such as expansive woodland for outdoor learning, dedicated therapy suites, specialised classrooms, and tailored recreation areas.

We operate a strict no-sponsorship policy; all applicants must have the permanent right to work in the UK.

Working Hours: Monday - Friday, 08:30 - 16:00

Responsibilities
  • Provide key 1:1 support, encouragement, and academic monitoring, focusing on long-term student engagement and building strong, trusting relationships.
  • Assist with the delivery of core subjects-including PSHE, numeracy, and literacy-while fostering essential daily living skills and independence.
  • Utilise multi-sensory communication techniques, such as signs, Makaton, symbols, or specialised aids, to support non-verbal and complex learners.
  • Offer steady emotional guidance to help students manage anxiety or frustration and develop effective self-regulation strategies.
  • Collaborate with a collaborative, multi-disciplinary team, taking advantage of ongoing professional development (including full training for roles requiring personal care support).
Key Requirements
  • Maths and English GCSE (or equivalent).
  • Proven track record working with SEN students, with a collaborative, team-oriented approach.
  • Demonstrated experience as a Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant, or within special education settings.
  • Self-motivated, resilient, and positive approach to supportive learning.
  • Eligibility to work in the UK (an enhanced DBS check will be required prior to appointment).
Desirable Criteria
  • Strong background working with non-verbal students and a solid understanding of Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and NVLD.
  • Up-to-date Safeguarding and Prevent training completed within the last 12 months (preferred, though refresher training is available).
