Offer Description

The University of Bordeaux is a great dynamic and responsible university that cares about the well-being of its staff. Joining us means working in a privileged environment within a particularly diverse and open professional community, benefiting from welcome and inclusion schemes, training and internal mobility. It means participating in an academic, scientific and human adventure. It means committing to meeting the challenges of the 21st century.

The Laboratoire Bordelais de Recherche en Informatique ( LaBRI ) – of the University of Bordeaux is a joint research unit under the joint supervision of the CNRS, Bordeaux INP and the University of Bordeaux.

The missions of LaBRI revolve around three main axes: research, training and transfer. The research conducted at LaBRI is both fundamental and finalised. It targets the field of computer science in the broad sense.

We are recruiting a Post-doctoral researcher invited to propose a research project on the computer processing of sound and musical data within the Studio for Creation and Research in Computer Science and Experimental Music ( SCRIME ).

Main activities:

This research position project is part of the general orientation of the SCRIME projects activity aimed at developing theoretical approaches for the design of tools dedicated to creation, analysis, performance and musical pedagogy. You will be fully attached to our team within LaBRI and will develop a project in alignment with this orientation under the supervision of Louis Bigo, platform director.

You will be invited to propose a research project in the general field of computer processing of sound and music data, commonly associated with the scientific communities of musical computing, Music Information Retrieval and Sound and Music Computing. The proposed project will be in line with our team’s overall objectives. Approaches involving the computer processing of data from guitar tablature and piano scores in classical and contemporary music repertoires (jazz, pop, rock, etc.) are particularly welcome.

We encourage you, although it is not required, to propose a project that falls within one of the current major axes of the team: "Algorithms to assist in the notation and composition of guitar tablatures" ( TABASCO project - TABlature ASsisted COmposition).

This axis brings together multiple issues, notably:

  • The computational analysis of large corpora of tablatures
  • Contextual generation of tablature regions (inpainting, outpainting)
  • The transfer of style on tablatures
  • Estimating positions from MIDI content (MIDI to tab)
  • Automatic transcription of audio content (audio to MIDI, audio to tab)

The musical performance assisted and enriched by meta-instruments, in particular the Metapiano. The Metapiano [1] is a simplified piano that allows you to interpret a score by controlling only the rhythm and the nuances of the notes. The project brings together multiple issues, notably:

  • The interpretation at different time scales (note, pulse, measure, ...) guided by tempo adaptation strategies
  • The development of a simplified improvisation system using a meta-instrument
  • The development of meta-instrument interfaces such as Web MidiFile Performer [2]

You will be able to supervise interns (M1 or M2 level) or supervise projects of computer science students at ENSEIRB-MATMECA or at the University of Bordeaux, in connection with the proposed research project.

Artistic creation and musical pedagogy occupying essential places in the team’s projects, you will be encouraged to set up collaborations with artists and teachers. You will publish and present your work at conferences and seminars organized by the community and mediation events for the general public.

Finally, you will fully participate in the daily life of the team, involving for example the organization of various cultural events for the general public or interventions with students.

  • Significant experience in data science and machine learning will be highly valued.
  • You like to work in a team while demonstrating autonomy in your research project.
  • Musical practice, or at least a strong interest in music, is highly desirable.
