Offer Description

In order to explore the fundamental and exotic properties of quantum materials — such as the quantum limit of dilute metals or the magnetic phases of quantum spin liquids — magnetic fields exceeding 100 teslas are essential. To meet these challenges, the LNCMI has recently begun constructing a new non-destructive pulsed magnet, which will ultimately reach 120 teslas.
The candidate will have two main missions.
The first will consist in developing instrumentation for ultrasonic and transport measurements at low temperatures in a new pulsed magnet capable of reaching 120 T, in collaboration with local scientists.
The second mission will be to carry out a research program on quantum materials — such as dilute metals and quantum spin liquids — in the 120 T pulsed magnet, in collaboration with scientists whose research requires magnetic fields exceeding 100 T.

The candidate will develop and implement new, faster instrumentation to meet the new constraints of the 120 T magnet. This involves testing new electronic components, integrating them into the setup, developing data acquisition software, and creating a user interface for controlling and operating the whole setup. New probes will be developed and tested in a cryogenic environment. The candidate will carry out measurements on electronic properties, followed by data analysis and the communication of results.

The Laboratoire National des Champs Magnétiques Intenses (LNCMI) is a very large research infrastructure (TGIR) of the CNRS, enabling researchers to carry out experiments in some of the most intense magnetic fields in the world. In addition, unique experimental facilities, developed in-house, are available for advanced physical measurements under magnetic fields.

Experimental techniques in condensed matter physics: cryogenics, transport measurements, and physical characterization of samples. The candidate must have experience in the experimental study of correlated-electron materials. Skills in Python and LabVIEW will be required.
