Job summary

Aiven is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join our platform team in Helsinki. You will design and refactor APIs, write robust Python code, and push features to production on our cloud data platform.

You’ll work across backend systems, distributed infrastructure, and platform security to improve scalability and reliability. As a senior contributor, you will mentor juniors, participate in architectural planning, and uphold strong testing and security practices while collaborating with teams

Qualifications

• Strong Python development experience.
• Proficient in API design and refactoring.
• Experience with cloud provider APIs (AWS/GCP/Azure).
• Familiarity with IaC and container orchestration.
• Deep Linux networking and operating systems knowledge.
• Hands-on with open-source data services (Kafka, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis, OpenSearch, ClickHouse).
• Understanding of distributed systems and microservices patterns.
• Experience running software in production with observability.
• Solid background in security principles for backend systems.
• Ability to write robust automated unit and integration tests.
• Fluent in English, written and spoken.

The Role:

We are seeking an experienced Senior Software Engineer, proficient in Python development, with expertise in API design and refactoring, to join our platform team. As a senior member, you will play a crucial role in transforming leading open-source technologies into seamless cloud services within the Aiven platform. You'll be part of a team working on the Aiven cloud platform, improving its scalability and reliability, and implementing new features to enhance the enterprise experience.

There are a range of specializations available across backend systems, distributed infrastructure, and platform security.

What You'll Do:

• Facilitate API design improvements and refactoring efforts to enhance platform functionality and performance.
• Write high-quality, maintainable code in Python, releasing, and monitoring quality features in production.
• Perform peer code reviews and actively participate in technical discussions both at the team level and across the broader product development engineering domain.
• Contribute to technical planning, system architecture, feature design, product roadmaps, and backlog management.
• Ensure the backend ecosystem maintains strong unit and functional testing coverage.
• Advocate for continuous improvements to software quality, platform security, and system performance.
• Mentor junior team members to foster technical growth and engineering best practices.

What We're Looking For:

• Development Skills: Excellent software development skills in Python.
• Cloud Platforms: Experience interacting directly with one or more cloud provider APIs (AWS, GCP, Azure).
• Infrastructure & Orchestration: Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) solutions and container orchestration tools.
• Networking: Familiarity with the Linux networking stack.
• Open-Source Data Services: Hands-on experience with managed open-source technologies, such as Apache Kafka, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis, OpenSearch, or ClickHouse.
• Operating Systems: Deep hands-on experience using Linux in both development and production environments.
• Architecture: Strong foundational knowledge of distributed systems and microservices patterns.
• Production Operations: Extensive experience managing, scaling, and operating software in production environments.
• Security: Solid understanding of backend software security principles and practices.
• Testing: A strong drive and standard for writing robust automated unit and integration tests.
• Communication: Fluency in English (written and verbal).

Nice to Have:

• Secrets & Key Management:Hands-on experience managing secrets and encryption keys.
• CI/CD:Experience building or configuring automated CI/CD pipelines.
• Observability Frameworks:Experience with monitoring, logging, and tracing tooling.
• Identity & Security:Experience with authorization and authentication protocols, especially in enterprise scenarios, as well as experience with Identity Providers (IDPs).
