Principal Technical Consultant - Google Cloud Platform (GCP)

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Principal Technical Consultant specialising in Google Cloud Platform (GCP) to lead complex cloud transformation, migration and modernisation initiatives for technology-driven clients.

This is a senior, hands-on technical consulting role combining deep cloud expertise, architectural leadership and client-facing responsibilities. You will guide organisations through their cloud adoption journeys, designing and delivering scalable, secure and cost-effective solutions aligned with their business objectives.

With an AI-first mindset, you will explore and apply advanced AI capabilities and intelligent automation to solve complex engineering challenges, improve delivery efficiency and accelerate cloud modernisation.

You will act as a trusted technical advisor to clients, working with stakeholders from engineering teams through to executive leadership. Alongside solution design and implementation, you will play a key role in engagement scoping, technical estimation, delivery oversight and the development of long-term client relationships.

Key Responsibilities

Cloud Architecture and Strategy

• Assess existing infrastructure, applications and databases to identify opportunities for cloud migration and modernisation.
• Design scalable, highly available, secure and cost-optimised GCP architectures.
• Develop target architectures, technical standards and implementation roadmaps.
• Lead end-to-end cloud migration, database modernisation and application refactoring initiatives.

Technical Consulting and Delivery

• Lead client-facing technical discussions, workshops and architectural reviews.
• Remain hands-on in the design, development and implementation of GCP-based solutions.
• Provide technical expertise across infrastructure as code, automation, CI/CD pipelines and cloud-native application development.
• Troubleshoot complex technical challenges and provide guidance to project delivery teams.
• Review technical deliverables to ensure quality, security and alignment with cloud best practices.

Engagement Scoping and Planning

• Collaborate with sales and solution architecture teams to define project scope, delivery timelines and technical requirements.
• Develop accurate level-of-effort estimates and contribute to Statements of Work and project proposals.
• Identify technical risks and recommend mitigation strategies during pre-sales and planning activities.
• Act as the senior technical decision-maker during engagement scoping, balancing technical requirements with delivery feasibility and commercial objectives.

AI and Innovation

• Apply an AI-first mindset to cloud architecture, engineering workflows and technical problem-solving.
• Identify opportunities to introduce intelligent automation and AI-driven approaches into client environments.
• Stay current with emerging cloud and AI technologies, translating new capabilities into practical client solutions.

Security and Compliance

• Design and implement secure cloud environments using GCP-native security capabilities and best practices.
• Apply strong identity and access management, networking and security controls.
• Ensure solutions align with relevant regulatory and compliance requirements.
• Conduct security assessments and recommend improvements to client cloud environments.

Client Relationships and Technical Leadership

• Build trusted relationships with technical and executive stakeholders.
• Translate complex technical concepts into clear business recommendations.
• Mentor other technical consultants and contribute to reusable assets, standards and delivery methodologies.
• Identify opportunities for further client engagements and contribute to the growth of the cloud consulting practice.

Skills and Experience

• Extensive hands-on experience architecting, implementing and managing solutions on Google Cloud Platform.
• Proven experience leading complex cloud migrations and modernisation programmes.
• Strong knowledge of GCP services, including Compute Engine, Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE), BigQuery, Cloud Storage and IAM.
• Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform and modern DevOps practices, including CI/CD and automation.
• Strong programming and scripting skills in Python, Go or Shell.
• Solid understanding of cloud networking, containers, Kubernetes and cloud security.
• Experience with GCP migration and assessment tools, such as Migration Center and Database Migration Service.
• Familiarity with data platforms, analytics services and cloud-native application architectures.
• An AI-first mindset, with the ability to apply AI capabilities and intelligent automation to practical technical challenges.
• Strong client-facing consulting experience, including technical workshops, solution presentations and stakeholder management.
• Experience with project scoping, effort estimation, technical risk assessment and commercial planning.
• Proven ability to provide technical leadership, mentor engineers and influence architectural decisions.
• A strong understanding of cloud security best practices and relevant compliance frameworks.
