The Department of Energy and Mechanical Engineering at the Aalto University School of Engineering invites applications for a: Master’s Thesis Worker The main objective of Artificial Intelligence-aided Design and Manufacturing, AIDMan is to promote competitive edge for Finnish companies through build-to-model digital quotation tool that bridges product design to manufacturing. AIDMan seeks to develop a physics-based and data-driven quotation tool that allows customers worldwide to upload product 3D model files to instantly estimate cost, lead-time, and environmental footprint using Finnish SME manufacturing capacity. Leveraging artificial intelligence, the tool links digital-twin features to manufacturing requirements. In the future, it can route jobs directly to machines for on-demand production—lowering coordination and transaction costs, mitigating information and opportunism risks, and reducing asset-specific reinvestments. By integrating cost, lead-time, and waste considerations into early product design, AIDMan helps product development engineers make informed decisions and enables Finnish companies to access global value chains dynamically based on manufacturing capacity and product value. This digitalization strengthens Finland’s SME-driven “mittelstand,”, enhances export potential, and enables production of smaller lot sizes profitable by reducing mundane transaction costs. The project involves Salon Metalelektro Oy, Stremet Oy, Helkone Oy, DeskArtes Oy, Valtterin Paja Oy, Mekanio Oy.
