Metso is seeking a Head of AI Engineering in Espoo to lead a globally distributed AI engineering team within the AI Transformation Office. You will drive engineering excellence, mentor junior and senior engineers, and ensure delivery of AI solutions across enterprise initiatives.

With a cloud-first stack and strong collaboration with Data & Analytics and IT, you will shape responsible AI practices while prioritizing speed, quality and governance. Hybrid work options supported.

Introduction

We are looking forHead of AI Engineering to join our AI Transformation Office within Metso’s Business Growth function. Metso has a modern, cloud-first technology stack that provides a strong foundation for scaling AI-enabled solutions across the enterprise. You will be joining a new and rapidly expanding AI Transformation organization, with the opportunity to build an environment where talented AI professionals can thrive and help Metso solve meaningful and impactful business challenges —using AI a critical enabler where it can deliver real value.

Forward-deployed engineering will be central to the delivery model. Your team will work closely with business owners and users, delivering across enterprise AI transformation initiatives as part of Metso's AI Transformation Program and AI initiatives within Business Growth and Central functions (e.g. HR and Finance). You will combine that business proximity with a connected professional home, reusable engineering practices and a commitment to speed, quality and responsible delivery.

Team you will belong to

This is a people-first technical leadership role. You will build a globally distributed team comprising Junior and Senior AI Solution Engineers, working technical leads, and quality, evaluation and reliability specialists. Combining experienced professionals with early-career talent, including recent university graduates, the team will serve as an incubator where people develop expertise through supported delivery, learn from one another and prepare to contribute across Metso’s businesses.

You will report to the VP, AI Transformation and collaborate closely with business stakeholders, the Data & Analytics organization, Metso Digital organizations and IT. Within the AI Transformation Office, you will work with platform and governance colleagues on architecture, shared services and technical guardrails; with portfolio colleagues on delivery visibility, capacity and dependencies; and with adoption colleagues on user readiness and the boundary between citizen AI and engineered solutions. Together, you will build lasting engineering capability while business owners retain responsibility for priorities, process decisions and outcomes.

• Build and lead a globally distributed AI engineering team where people feel supported, engaged and able to do their best work.
• Develop engineers and technical leads at every career stage, including recent graduates, through mentoring and meaningful assignments.
• Establish a forward-deployed engineering model that brings engineers close to business owners and users for fast, impactful delivery.
• Own the delivery of agreed AI solutions across enterprise transformation, Business Growth and central-function initiatives.
• Advance AI-centric responsible software development, using AI throughout design, build, testing and maintenance.
• Set high standards for code quality, testing, evaluation, security and reliable releases, aligned with Metso’s architecture and guardrails.
• Continuously improve engineering effectiveness together with platform, IT, Data & Analytics and Metso Digital colleagues.
• Build lasting internal capability by working with external partners and making knowledge transfer part of every delivery.

What you’ll bring

• Proven people-first technical leadership, combining care for people with clear expectations and accountable delivery.
• Experience recruiting and developing technical talent, from experienced leaders to recent graduates.
• A strong background in delivering production software, with the credibility to guide design decisions and solve difficult problems.
• A practical understanding of AI-centric software development, covering both AI-enabled applications and AI-assisted engineering.
• Experience establishing engineering practices that balance speed with testing, review and operational discipline.
• An understanding of forward-deployed or business-embedded engineering, and how to keep quality and reuse strong across assignments.
• The ability to lead globally and collaborate across functions, locations and time zones.
• A relevant degree or equivalent experience in engineering, computer science, AI or a related field. Experience leading business-embedded AI delivery in a global industrial company is a plus.
