Job summary

MAKIINA in Tampere, Finland is seeking a hands-on Machining Specialist to take drawings from concept to finished components. You'll program and run our CNC turning and milling machines, develop fixturing, tooling, and processes, and help move from prototype to repeatable production.

You will work with mechanical designers to optimize speed, manufacturability, cost and scalability, machining actuator housings, shafts and precision parts.

Qualifications

• Concrete, hands-on machining experience with CNC turning and milling in production or prototype shop.
• Scrappy, high-agency, fast learner with ownership of setup, tooling, offsets and first-article inspection.
• Confident reading technical drawings and GD&T, and working to tight tolerances.
• CAM programming with Solidcam or Mastercam, with ability to edit G-code at the machine when needed.
• Solid materials knowledge across aluminium, steels, stainless and plastics.

Responsibilities

• Machining parts on lathes and mills and taking parts from drawing to finished components.
• Develop fixturing, tooling, and processes to enable rapid transition from prototype to batch production.
• Collaborate with mechanical designers to optimize speed, manufacturability, cost and scalability.
• Work with actuator housings, gearbox components and precision parts to ensure robot performance.

Job description

MAKIINA is building the hardware and software stack for physical intelligence: modular, low-cost, scalable, and made in Finland.

From drone motors, actuators, power electronics, sensor units, perception stacks, to a breakthrough AI robotics foundation model, each piece is built like LEGO blocks so they fit together into different form factors of physical AI agents, affordably and at scale.

We are a Tampere (Finland) based startup, with a very healthy funding base.

Role Description

You will make our parts and you will make them better. That means programming and running our CNC machines, taking a part from drawing to finished component, and building the fixturing, tooling and processes that let us go from a one-off prototype on Monday to a repeatable batch on Tuesday. While machining on our lathes and mills may be your main responsibility, taking part in running the other machinery as well as supporting assembly are likely.

You'll work directly with our mechanical designers, discussing and improving speed, manufacturability, cost, and scalability. Actuator housings, gearbox components, motor parts, tight-tolerance shafts and bearing seats: these are the parts that decide whether our robots work. This role is full time on-site at our Tampere facilities.

Required Qualifications

• Concrete, hands-on machining experience. CNC turning and/or milling, in a real production or prototype shop.


• Scrappy, high-agency, and a fast learner.


• Comfortable with full ownership of a setup: workholding, tooling selection, offsets, feeds and speeds, first-article inspection.


• Confident reading technical drawings and GD&T, and working to tight tolerances.


• CAM programming (Solidcam, Mastercam or similar), and comfortable editing G-code at the machine when relevant.


• Solid materials knowledge across aluminium, steels, stainless and plastics, and knowing what each one wants from you.


• Experience in measuring and probing parts.


• Ability to move fast and take ownership and initiative.


• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.


• Vocational qualification in machining, a Bachelor's or Master's in mechanical or production engineering, or equivalent experience. We care far more about what you've actually made than about which certificate you hold.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Haas, DMG Mori, Y-axis or live-tooling lathes, bar feeder work, swiss lathes, or 5-axis milling.


• CAD proficiency (Solidworks or similar).


• Additive manufacturing (SLS 3D printing), sheet metal and laser cutting, welding, or motor and coil winding.


• Domain experience in machining components for robotics, actuators, motors or precision mechanisms.


• Open to possible shift work to keep our production running non-stop.


• Proficiency in Finnish is a plus.
