Aalto University's QD group, led by Professor Päivi Törmä, is seeking a motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to advance the control of emission properties in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) using nanoparticles embedded within the devices. The project combines organic electronics, plasmonics, nanophotonics and advanced nanofabrication. Its objective is to develop novel nanoparticle-array geometries that improve OLED performance while enabling precise control over emission properties, including polarization, colour and angular distribution. The research also aims to understand and extract lossy modes within OLED devices, establishing a deeper understanding of their optical behaviour. Alongside fundamental research, the project has a commercialization objective, with a focus on significantly improving OLED efficiency and controlling their emission characteristics.
The successful candidate will join the QD group at Aalto University, led by Professor Päivi Törmä, whose research focuses on nanophotonics and light–matter interactions. The Department of Applied Physics provides extensive research infrastructure, including Micronova, a major micro- and nanofabrication research centre in the Nordic countries. The QD group's optical laboratory includes a femtosecond laser, two Fourier-plane imaging setups, source-meter units, oscilloscopes and custom-built OLED characterization systems. The group is also associated with the Centre of Excellence in Quantum Materials (Qmat) and the Finnish Quantum Institute (Institute Q). The research environment offers opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and access to advanced fabrication and characterization facilities.
Applicants should hold, or expect to obtain soon, a PhD degree in a suitable field. Hands‑on experience in nanofabrication, OLED fabrication, characterization and electronics is required.Candidates must demonstrate a strong understanding of organic electronics and nanophotonics, good written and spoken English skills, and the ability to disseminate scientific results. Applicants should be motivated to pursue research at the highest international level.Finnish‑language proficiency is not required.
The initial postdoctoral contract is for two years. The salary follows the Finnish universities' salary system and ranges from €4,229 to €4,649 per month, depending on previous experience. The position includes Aalto University occupational healthcare. The primary workplace is the Otaniemi Campus in Espoo, approximately 10 km from central Helsinki.
