Job description

2 Senior Lecturers, Software Engineering and Artificial Intelligence

The JYU is a nationally and internationally significant research university and an expert on education that focuses on human and natural sciences.

The Faculty of Information Technology is seeking Senior Lecturers in the fields of Software Engineering and Artificial Intelligence for the International Bachelor’s Programme in Immersive Software Engineering & AI to begin on January 1, 2027, or as soon as possible thereafter. These positions are valid until further notice.

In the Immersive Software Engineering & AI program , the Senior Lecturer serves as a curriculum designer, coach, and active mentor. The program’s operating model relies on mutual commitment of the students and the teaching staff. Students are expected to attend daily, work actively, and be the owners of their learning. Similarly, teachers support students on a daily basis and guide their learning. The Senior Lecturer is responsible for ensuring that teaching, student work, and related guidance form a goal-oriented and consistently progressing learning process, as well as for the planning and coordination of this process.

The program’s pedagogical approach—which combines the challenge with strong and timely support—is known to strengthen students’ motivation and to promote good learning outcomes. While the students take responsibility for their own learning, they receive daily guidance and support from the staff. A university lecturer teaches, designs goal-oriented and appropriately challenging exercises, and guides the work of the instructors involved in providing daily support to students.

Who should apply

Senior Lecturers are required to hold a relevant doctoral degree, possess strong expertise in information technology, demonstrate a track record of scientific research through publications, have a good pedagogical eye, be capable of providing high-quality, research-based instruction, and supervise theses.

In addition, professional IT skills and familiarity with the technologies and teaching methods relevant to the position are required. We value experience in research, development, and innovation in the technology sector; working in multidisciplinary teams; guiding project-based and team-based learning; and collaboratively developing teaching and assessment methods. The position requires a continuous commitment to developing one’s own expertise as information technology and artificial intelligence evolve.

When evaluating qualifications, we will consider scientific work, teaching experience, pedagogical training, developed learning materials, and evidence of guiding active and collaborative learning. In addition, evidence of expertise in assessment development, English-language and multicultural teaching, collaboration with the working world, and responsibilities related to the organization of teaching will be considered.

The applicant’s teaching and guidance skills will also be assessed through a teaching demonstration. Particular attention is paid to the applicant’s ability to set an appropriate level of challenge and expectations, engage students, guide their problem-solving, and support learning in an interactive setting.

The work requires strong pedagogical judgment and a deep mastery of the subject being taught. A senior lecturer must be able to assess what kinds of goals and assignments appropriately challenge students, as well as when to give students space for independent problem-solving. At the same time, they must recognize situations in which learning requires more active guidance, feedback, additional practice, or adjustments to assignments. The goal of guidance is to strengthen students’ sense of responsibility, competence, and professional independence.
