A leading renewable energy company in Madrid is seeking a Safety Design Lead Associate to integrate health, safety, and risk management into offshore wind projects. You will provide technical leadership by ensuring safety principles are embedded throughout the design and engineering processes. The ideal candidate will have a degree in Engineering or a related field, with expertise in risk assessments and strong analytical skills. This role offers a hybrid work model with potential for travel.

Formación

The Safety Design Lead Associate will ensure that health, safety, and risk considerations are fully embedded into the design, engineering, and development of Ocean Winds’ global offshore wind projects. This role provides technical leadership in safety by design, integrating risk management, industry standards, and lessons learned at every stage of the asset lifecycle — from concept and FEED through to commissioning and operations.

Safety by Design Leadership
  • Own the global Safety by Design framework, ensuring consistency across all new projects.
  • Integrate safety principles into engineering design reviews, hazard identification (HAZID), and risk assessment processes.
  • Ensure Life Saving Rules and lessons learned are embedded into engineering specifications.
  • Drive alignment with ISO, IEC, and other international safety standards.
Design Reviews & Assurance
  • Lead safety input into design risk assessments, HAZOP / HAZID / LOPA studies, and constructability reviews.
  • Collaborate with engineering, operations, and OEM contractors to mitigate design risks.
  • Ensure safety critical elements are identified, tracked, and verified.
  • Provide assurance checks that design modifications enhance, not compromise, safety.
Knowledge & Continuous Improvement
  • Capture and apply lessons learned from incidents and near misses across global projects.
  • Benchmark OW’s design standards against industry best practice and regulatory expectations.
  • Participate in external forums and technical committees to represent Ocean Winds and influence global standards.
Collaboration & Influence
  • Work closely with the H&S Director, Engineering Directors, and Project Directors to ensure safety requirements are prioritised.
  • Provide clear, evidence based safety advice to executives and project teams during key stage gates.
  • Support bid submissions with robust safety input that strengthens competitive positioning.
Academic Background

Degree in Engineering, Health & Safety, Risk Management, or related field.

Languages

Fluent English (spoken and written). Other languages highly valued.

Professional Experience
  • Proven track record of applying safety by design principles in offshore wind, renewables, oil & gas, or other high risk industries.
  • Expertise in structured risk assessments (HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA, BowTie).
  • Experience working with multi disciplinary engineering and design teams.
Knowledge

Strong knowledge of relevant standards (e.g. IEC, ISO 12100, ISO 45001) and regulatory requirements.

Deep technical understanding of engineering design processes in energy / renewables.

Skills

Strong analytical and problem solving skills with ability to influence early stage decisions :

  • Foresight – Anticipates risks at the design stage and embeds preventative solutions.
  • Communication and Influence – Explains complex technical risks clearly to non engineers, and guides diverse stakeholders toward safe design decisions.
  • Clarity – Distils technical safety requirements into simple, actionable direction.
  • Collaboration – Builds strong partnerships across engineering and H&S. Skilled facilitator of cross functional workshops and design reviews.
  • Accountability – Owns safety outcomes as a core design deliverable.
Other Requirements

Role based in Madrid, with potential for domestic and international travel. Hybrid work model in place.
