Photonic Design Engineer

Spain - Onsite working required

An exciting opportunity is available for an Photonic Engineer to join a cutting-edge photonic foundry specializing in Indium Phosphide (InP) technologies. This hands-on role is ideal for recent graduates or early-career professionals eager to develop skills in integrated photonic device development, simulation, and fabrication within an advanced semiconductor environment.

The Engineer will work as part of a multidisciplinary team on the design, development, and characterization of InP-based optoelectronic components such as lasers, modulators, and photodetectors. The role includes exposure to design tools, fabrication techniques, cleanroom operations, and device testing.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Execute assigned tasks in the design, simulation, and layout of InP-based photonic integrated circuits (PICs).
  • Assist in the development and optimization of photonic and optoelectronic devices (e.g., laser diodes, modulators, detectors).
  • Support process engineers in fabrication-related tasks, including troubleshooting device yield and performance issues.
  • Analyse experimental and testing data, contribute to reports and documentation.
  • Collaborate with other engineers and designers on the implementation of new process flows and design iterations.
  • Follow cleanroom protocols and maintain accurate logs of fabrication steps and measurements.
  • Participate in internal technical reviews and skill development activities.
  • Adhere to safety and quality standards in all lab and cleanroom environments.
Required Education:
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, Applied Physics, Photonics, Materials Science, Optoelectronics, or a closely related field.
  • Academic or research experience in III-V semiconductors or integrated photonics is highly valued.
Technical Skills:
  • Basic understanding of semiconductor physics, photonics, and optoelectronic device operation.
  • Familiarity with InP fabrication and processing is desirable.
  • Experience with photonic design and simulation tools such as:
    • KLayout, Cadence, or IPKISS
    • Lumerical (FDTD, MODE)
    • COMSOL Multiphysics
  • Knowledge of PDKs (Process Design Kits) and DRC (Design Rule Checking) is a plus.
  • Hands-on experience with lab/test equipment (e.g., optical spectrum analyzers, probe stations, power meters).
  • Exposure to simulation tools for optical, electrical, or thermal modeling (e.g., Lumerical, Silvaco, COMSOL).
  • Scripting/programming experience in Python, MATLAB, or similar environments for automation and analysis.
  • Basic knowledge of cleanroom processes (e.g., lithography, etching, deposition, metallization, wafer bonding).
  • Proficiency in technical English, both written and spoken.

Looking to launch your career in integrated photonics? Apply now and take part in shaping the next generation of InP-based technologies.
