Descripción del empleo

Overview

Applications are invited for a fully funded 4-year PhD position to work under my supervision on the Metal-THINGS survey of nearby galaxies. The student would join our active group at the Complutense University of Madrid (Universidad Complutense de Madrid).

The Metal-THINGS survey is obtaining IFU spectroscopy for a unique sample of 34 nearby galaxies. These galaxies have been extensively observed across the electromagnetic spectrum, from radio to UV, including data from HST, JWST, VLA, LOFAR, and Dustpedia. With more than 130 nights of observations already completed using the IFU instrument VIRUS-P at McDonald Observatory (Texas), Metal-THINGS provides thousands of spectra at spatial scales of 40–300 pc.

Responsibilities
  • Analyze star formation rates (SFRs) across different galaxy environments.
  • Investigate the multiwavelength properties of Metal-THINGS galaxies.
  • Explore the interplay between stellar populations, gas, dust, and feedback in shaping galaxy evolution.
Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree in Physics or a related field, and a Master’s degree, preferably in Astrophysics or a related area.
  • Good level of English (spoken and written).
  • Programming experience (Python or R preferred).
  • Previous experience with spectroscopy or galaxy surveys is an advantage, but not required.
  • Applications from women and underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged.
How to apply
  • Interested candidates should send the following documents to maritzal@ucm.es :
  • A CV
  • Transcripts of undergraduate and Master’s studies (in English if possible, at this stage a simple online translation is acceptable, together with the original copy)
  • Contact details of one referee.
Deadline

Priority will be given to applications received by September 12, 2025. Feel free to email me if you have any question.
