About the position

Softonic is looking for a Lead Data Engineer to join our talented Business Intelligence team in Barcelona.

In this role, you will play a crucial part in building and maintaining the data infrastructure that empowers our BI Engineers to transform data into actionable insights. If you are passionate about data, have a strong technical skillset, and enjoy working in a collaborative environment, we encourage you to apply.

Key responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership and mentorship to a team of data engineers, fostering collaboration and setting the technical direction across best practices, architecture, and tooling.
• Manage and optimise current data ingestion workflows on Google Cloud Platform (GCP), and design integrations for new data sources into the data lake.
• Design and develop scalable, efficient data pipelines and a robust data architecture.
• Develop, monitor, and maintain GCP infrastructure for data ingestion and processing, with a focus on performance, reliability and cost optimisation.
• Design, develop and improve DevOps processes for the data lake (e.g. Git workflows, CI/CD pipelines, staging environments, deployment strategies, and access control).
• Work closely with the Head of BI to drive key data projects from inception to completion. Responsibilities include project scoping, solution design, planning, coordinating internal and external teams, and ensuring a successful execution.
• Ensure data security, governance and compliance across the platform, maintaining the reliability and integrity of production systems.
• Collaborate with business stakeholders to gather data requirements and deliver solutions aligned with organisational objectives.
• Stay up-to-date with the latest data engineering technologies and best practices, and actively share your knowledge to support the growth and development of team members.

Minimum experience and qualifications

• 8+ years of proven experience in a senior or lead data engineering role.
• Strong programming skills in Python.
• Proficiency in SQL, BigQuery and a solid understanding of data modelling techniques.
• Familiarity with dbt for data transformation and modelling.
• Hands‑on experience building data pipelines and managing workflows using orchestration tools such as Airflow (or similar).
• Familiarity with API integration and various data extraction methods.
• Understanding of data governance best practices around security, quality and compliance.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work cross‑functionally with both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with a proactive mindset.
• Fluency in English, both written and spoken.

Nice to have

• Solid understanding of Google Cloud Platform services, including Compute Engine, Cloud Storage, Cloud Composer and serverless deployments.
• Experience working within Agile methodologies.
• Exposure to machine learning workflows and collaboration with ML teams.
