Job summary

AECOM in Madrid seeks a Junior Electrical Engineer to join the Rail Systems and Traction Power team. You will deliver electrification projects for metro, light rail, tram and mainline systems, collaborating across disciplines to ensure design quality and on-time delivery.

The role requires 1–3 years in power systems or railway electrification, strong teamwork, and English communication. CAD/BIM familiarity is a plus; Spanish fluency is advantageous.

Qualifications

• Electrical engineer with 1–3 years' experience in power systems or railway electrification.
• Must be able to communicate and develop projects in English.
• Knowledge of ETAP or DIgSILENT PowerFactory or equivalent.
• Desirable railway electrification experience and substation knowledge.
• CAD and BIM proficiency is a plus.
• Other languages, especially French or Italian, are a plus.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to design development, risk assessment, and value engineering for traction power systems.
• Create electrical studies and analyze network models using power-system software.
• Space proofing design for TPS installations and cable routing.
• Produce technical reports, specs, and liaise with BIM/CAD modellers.
• Develop diagrams, schematics, and equipment schedules for project stages.
• Review client and supplier documentation; support technical solutions.
• Assist with site surveys, testing, and commissioning when required.
• Integrate design within the System Engineering and System Assurance process.
• Attend design team meetings and present design justifications.

Job Description

We are seeking a Junior Electrical Engineer to join our Rail Systems and Traction Power team in Madrid.

The successful candidate will work as part of multidisciplinary teams delivering railway electrification projects for metro, light rail, tram and mainline railway systems.

Capabilities

Tasks

• During all the stages of a project, contribute to design development, design risk and mitigation and value engineering, regarding traction power system and traction power substations.
• Development of electrical studies and analysis of electrical network models using power-system analysis software such as ETAP, DIgSILENT PowerFactory or equivalent tools.
• Space proofing design for the TPS installations, including cable routing design.
• Produce technical reports, technical specifications, liaise with BIM/CAD modellers for production of drawings, BoQ, and any other documentation required on each stage of the project.
• Development of technical reports, calculation notes, specifications, equipment schedules, single-line diagrams, schematics and other engineering deliverables.
• Review technical documentation, drawings and equipment data provided by clients, suppliers and other engineering disciplines, identifying inconsistencies and supporting the development of appropriate technical solutions.
• Support technical proposals, site surveys, inspections, testing and commissioning activities when required, delivering assigned work in accordance with project quality, programme and budget requirements.
• Integration of the design process inside the System Engineering and System Assurance (SESA) process of the project.
• Attend design team meetings and defend/justify the design in front of the client or independent reviewers.

Qualifications

• Electrical engineer with proven experience preferably within power systems or railway electrification (1-3 years)
• The candidate must be able to communicate and fully develop projects in English.
• Knowledge of power-system analysis software such as ETAP, DIgSILENT PowerFactory or equivalent
• Desirable experience in:
• Railway electrification (DC and AC), specifically design, construction, test & commissioning, and maintenance of electrical substations
• Development of technical specifications of electrical substation equipment
• Electrical calculations of railway traction electrical substations
• Design, calculation, and construction of grounding & bonding networks for electric railways in DC and AC
• Design, calculation, parameterization, and test & commissioning of electrical protections in DC and AC electric railways
• Design, installation, test & commissioning, and maintenance of distributed control systems at the substation level, remote control level, and the Control Center level.
• Other skills (desirable but not mandatory ):
• CAD and BIM proficiency
• Other Languages, especially French or Italian.
