About the Role
Full‑time, remote‑first role with optional on‑site meetings in Berlin and an immediate start. We are an impact‑driven EdTech scale‑up delivering accredited online BA and MA programmes across two legal entities, combining rapid operational growth with a mission to teach future‑ready skills centred on sustainability. We are building an investment‑grade finance function and are seeking a strategic, hands‑on leader to head Finance & Business Operations.
Reporting directly to the COO (currently covering CFO responsibilities part‑time), you will lead the Finance & Accounting Manager from day one and shape the future finance organisation, including the hiring plan as we scale. You will own FP&A, financial controls, treasury and investor‑ready reporting, and act as the finance lead for legal and compliance matters with material business impact. The role blends strategic design of scalable finance processes and systems with hands‑on responsibility for planning, controlling and complex accounting issues.
Daily bookkeeping is managed by the accounting team, while you oversee overall outcomes, escalations and complex cases.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and develop the finance function by coaching the Finance & Accounting Manager and coordinating external advisors for tax, payroll and audits.
- Own monthly, quarterly and annual close governance to ensure consistent, timely and high‑quality financial closes and reporting packs.
- Build and operate FP&A, including dynamic forecasts, scenario planning, variance analysis and monthly business reviews with leadership.
- Drive treasury and cash management through liquidity forecasting, payroll funding and optimisation of bank and payment flows.
- Actively support cash‑flow optimisation beyond equity by evaluating and implementing non‑equity financing options such as revenue‑based financing, venture debt, factoring and other working‑capital solutions.
- Build business cases, assess cost of capital and coordinate negotiations and due diligence with lenders and legal advisors.
- Prepare investor‑ready reporting and maintain due‑diligence‑ready documentation by leading finance‑side due diligence coordination and preparing materials for potential funding or strategic partnership processes.
- Own finance‑related legal topics, including intercompany governance and accounting policies, finance inputs to partnership and supplier contracts, and coordination with external legal counsel on tax and contract risk mitigation; with the opportunity to expand into HR financial governance (headcount planning, payroll controls) as the function grows.
- Own revenue operations and revenue‑recognition logic, including subscription billing, Stripe reconciliation and failed‑payment processes.
- Lead process and systems improvements such as automation, imports/exports and reporting pipelines to scale finance operations.
- Take ownership of critical accounting escalations, including intercompany bookings, AR/AP edge cases and year‑end preparations.
Success Metrics (first 6–12 months)
- Investment‑grade monthly closes delivered consistently within agreed SLAs.
- A reliable, repeatable cash‑forecasting and liquidity‑management process trusted by leadership.
- A due‑diligence‑ready financial pack and documented controls in place for potential funding or strategic‑partner processes.
- A clear finance organisation model and hiring plan aligned with business growth.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in finance, controlling, accounting or consulting, ideally in startups or scale‑ups; experience in SaaS or education is a plus.
- Proven leadership experience, including managing people and coordinating external advisors.
- Hands‑on FP&A and modelling skills, with the ability to build models yourself and fully own the outputs.
- Experience preparing investor reporting and supporting financial due diligence; experience on either the startup or investor side of an equity round is a strong advantage.
- Strong technical skills, including advanced Google Sheets/Excel modelling; practical experience with DATEV, Stripe and Spendesk is desirable, and familiarity with data tools (BigQuery/SQL, Looker Studio) is a plus.
- Fluent English is required. German is nice to have but not mandatory, as we prioritise English capability and the ability to collaborate with German advisors.
- An ownership mindset, a pragmatic problem‑solver and a strong communicator who can translate finance into business decisions.
