Softonic is seeking an Engineering Manager for the Native team in Barcelona. You will lead up to two engineering squads, stay hands-on with architecture reviews, and guide technical decisions for our mobile apps and backend services.

You will balance delivery, team growth, and technical excellence while shaping the Native roadmap to meet company goals. The role requires 5+ years managing engineering teams with a hands-on background in native mobile development, plus experience with React Native

About the role

As Engineering Manager for the Native team, you'll lead the people and technical direction behind our mobile apps and the backend services that power them. You'll manage up to two engineering teams while staying hands‑on with reviewing architecture, guiding technical decisions, and jumping into React Native or Kotlin issues when needed. Working closely with the Director of Engineering, you'll balance delivery, team growth, and technical excellence while shaping the Native roadmap to support our company goals.

Key responsibilities

• Manage up to two engineering teams, combining native and cross functional profiles.
• Guide development of our React Native app and the Kotlin native modules behind it, with Swift and Objective‑C modules planned ahead.
• Stay hands‑on with the codebase: review architecture decisions and support engineers directly on technical problems.
• Drive technical decisions on exposing backend endpoints through our API gateway.
• Own infrastructure decisions tied to the Native team: Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, Crossplane, and GCP.
• Remove roadblocks for your teams and keep delivery aligned with Product Owners.
• Align Tech Owner OKRs each quarter with Product needs.
• Facilitate decisions within your teams and with business stakeholders, backed by clear diagnosis and recommendations.
• Build the mid to long term Native team strategy with the Director of Engineering.
• Support your teams’ growth and engagement by managing performance, career development, time off, and day‑to‑day people matters, while partnering with HR, Agile Coaches, and Tech Owners to create a positive team environment and ensure people practices are followed.

Must have

• 5+ proven years managing engineering teams, including direct experience leading native mobile development.
• Hands‑on Engineering Manager who stays close to the code: reviews architecture, jumps into React Native or Kotlin issues when needed, and does not manage from a distance.
• Hands on background building native apps yourself before moving into management.
• Proven record managing cross functional teams, not only native specialists.
• Experience managing up to two teams at the same time.
• Strong grasp of React Native and Kotlin.
• Experience with monorepo setups across multiple native apps.
• Knowledge of how to package and distribute a native app outside official stores, in addition to standard App Store and Play Store releases.
• Comfort exposing and consuming backend services through an API gateway.
• Working knowledge of Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, Crossplane, and GCP.
• Solid grasp of our backend stack: NodeJS, TypeScript, JavaScript, and PHP.
• Experience running Scrum, Kanban, or Lean.
• Coaching and mentoring skills for direct reports and key stakeholders.
• Comfort with Jira or Trello for lifecycle management.

Nice to Have

• Experience with Swift or Objective‑C in production.
• Experience with Kotlin Multiplatform or Flutter.
• Background scaling a native app across iOS and Android at the same time.
• Exposure to multi module Kotlin architectures.
• Experience partnering with platform or infra teams on Terraform and Crossplane setups.
• Prior work in a product with millions of active users.
