J.P. Morgan Personal Investing is expanding its Brokerage service in Madrid to provide self-investing through mobile and web apps. A Director of Engineering will lead several high-impact teams, shape technical strategy and deliver secure, scalable systems aligned with business goals.

You will report to the Senior Director of Engineering and oversee teams in Madrid and London, driving governance, architecture, and incident management while hiring and developing leaders to achieve excellence.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of software engineering experience with 10+ years in technical leadership.
• Strong product and business mindset with consumer-facing product exposure.
• Exceptional communication and stakeholder management across technical and non-technical audiences.
• Solid background in modern architectures (distributed systems, cloud-native, event-driven) and DevOps.
• Proven track record leading agile teams delivering high-availability systems.
• Excellent coaching, feedback and conflict-resolution skills.

Responsabilités

• Translate strategy into requirements, prioritize roadmaps and ensure on-time delivery of features.
• Enable cross-functional alignment within Brokerage teams and across divisions with clear processes and docs.
• Oversee architectural decisions for scalability, reliability, performance and cost efficiency.
• Lead compliance and governance with Controls stakeholders for all software deliveries.
• Promote platform thinking, microservices boundaries and data contracts with debt payoff plans.
• Oversee engineering costs, vendor management and SLAs.
• Hire, develop and retain engineering managers and senior ICs; manage headcount planning.
• Grow engineering managers and engineers with career pathways and feedback.
• Foster collaboration, accountability and operational excellence.
• Own incident management, on-call strategy and post-incident reviews to improve reliability.

J.P. Morgan Personal Investing is expanding its current offering with a new Brokerage service to provide self-investing for our customers through our Mobile and Web apps.

We are seeking a Director of Engineering to lead one of the JPM PI Brokerage areas, managing several high-impact engineering teams, driving execution on the product roadmap and scaling our technology, people, and processes. You will be responsible for shaping technical strategy, building and mentoring high-performing managers and engineers and delivering reliable, secure, and scalable systems that support our business goals.

You will be reporting to the Senior Director of Engineering of the Madrid hub and will oversee teams based in Madrid and London.

Key Responsibilities:

• Partner with Product, Business, Marketing and Operations stakeholders and other Brokerage directors to translate strategy into requirements, prioritize roadmaps, remove blockers and ensure on-time execution of product features to contribute to the company’s business goals.

• Enable cross-functional alignment within Brokerage teams and across other company verticals through efficient processes, clear communication and effective roadmaps and documentation including decision records.

• Supervise architectural decisions for scalability, reliability, performance and cost efficiency; review and approve major design proposals.

• Lead compliance and governance for systems in your remit. Engage Controls stakeholders from day one, establishing strong working relationships and ensuring adherence to required processes so that all software deliveries are fully compliant.

• Promote platform thinking, reuse, and implementation of best practices (e.g., microservices boundaries, data contracts, API standards), while managing technical debt with clear criteria and payoff plans.

• Oversee engineering costs and vendor management in your area, ensuring ROI, compliance and appropriate SLAs.

• Hire, develop and retain top talent, structuring teams for autonomy and clarity. You will own hiring budgets and headcount forecasting in your area.

• Manage, mentor, and grow engineering managers and senior ICs, providing career pathways, constructive feedback, and succession planning.

• Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, personal growth, continuous improvement and operational excellence.

• Own incident management, on-call strategy and post-incident reviews to improve reliability and reduce toil.

Required Qualifications:

• 5+ years of experience as a software engineer plus 10+ years in positions of technical leadership.

• Strong product and business mindset and experience working with high-profile products in the consumer market.

• Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills across technical and non-technical audiences in complex domains. Full English working proficiency is a must.

• Strong technical background in modern architectures (distributed systems, cloud-native, event-driven architectures), SDLC, and DevOps practices.

• Proven track record leading and scaling agile teams that deliver complex, high-availability systems at pace.

• Excellent coaching, feedback, and conflict-resolution skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in Fintech or a similar regulated environment where you were exposed to areas like security, compliance or risk management.

• Experience leading cross-border teams and delivering an international product with different localizations and currencies.

• Experience working with Data systems and data at scale.

• Hands-on familiarity with AWS, JVM, Kafka and/or relational and NoSQL databases.
