Field Engineering supports the safe, reliable operation and continuous improvement of data centers and other mission-critical facilities. As infrastructure systems increase in scale and complexity, controls engineering plays a central role in integrating mechanical, electrical, and software systems, detecting operational risk, and converting field experience into repeatable engineering standards.

Key job responsibilities
  • Lead advanced post-event engineering analysis for controls-related loss of visibility, loss of system resiliency, site impairment, critical events, and large-scale incidents, including root-cause analyses, technical field reports, and time-sensitive investigation reports.
  • Identify recurring controls failure patterns and develop scalable corrective actions, engineering standards, and system-health metrics that improve reliability across the facility portfolio.
  • Develop, review, standardize, and maintain controls logic and reusable code templates for mechanical and electrical equipment while preserving the intent of approved Sequences of Operations.
  • Improve the standardization and deployment readiness of controls code for air‑handling and cooling units, pumps and packaged skids, chillers, electrical systems, and other equipment that falls outside conventional supervisory-controller support boundaries.
  • Scope and design controls retrofit projects; create engineering design packages and scalable templates; perform code reviews; respond to technical information requests; and lead technical validation and project closeout.
  • Own the engineering lifecycle for legacy Sequence of Operations update pilots, including request intake, technical review, pilot‑code development, change planning, field execution, results analysis, and go/no‑go recommendations for broader deployment.
  • Troubleshoot complex issues that exceed existing procedures or frontline support capability across Building Management Systems (BMS), Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS), programmable logic controllers (PLCs), supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), controllers, field I/O, sensors, actuators, communications networks, graphical interfaces, alarms, setpoints, and equipment‑level logic.
  • Review controls drawings, wiring diagrams, network topologies, equipment submittals, control‑device selection, logic programming, graphical interfaces, and deployed configurations to identify reliability, operability, cybersecurity, and maintainability risks.
  • Provide field‑facing engineering support for proprietary and third‑party controls products; aggregate defects and feature requests; and partner with product engineering teams to drive bug fixes and continuous improvement.
  • Create and maintain technical baselines, test scripts, success criteria, points lists, naming conventions, alarm thresholds, equipment settings, standard setpoints, code libraries, and engineering playbooks.
  • Partner with facility operations, maintenance, deployment, commissioning, design engineering, product engineering, information technology, cybersecurity, project‑management teams, and vendors to resolve technical issues while maintaining clear ownership boundaries.
  • Coordinate with Controls Field Engineers across the globe to align priorities, share lessons learned, and prevent isolated solutions or duplicated engineering effort.
  • Mentor engineers and partner teams on practical controls engineering, code implementation, troubleshooting methods, and the safe execution of pilots and retrofit work.
  • Travel to operating facilities as required to support investigations, first‑of‑kind pilots, project validation, and complex engineering escalations.
A day in the life

You are embedded with a regional Field Engineering organization and work at the intersection of controls software, mechanical systems, electrical systems, networking, and critical‑facility operations. On a typical day, you may analyze trend and event data from a recent site issue, review controls logic against an approved Sequence of Operations, develop a reusable code template, or work with site and service teams to resolve a complex equipment‑integration problem.

You also convert individual field findings into portfolio‑level improvements. This may include authoring a root‑cause analysis or technical field report, developing a retrofit design package, preparing a pilot and its test criteria, reviewing supplier code, or presenting a technical recommendation to engineering and operational stakeholders.

Some work is performed remotely, while investigations, pilots, and project validation may require travel to operating facilities.

You are known as the engineer who can move from field evidence to root cause, from root cause to a practical engineering solution, and from a successful solution to a repeatable standard.

About The Team

Field Engineering supports critical operational functions across a geographically distributed infrastructure portfolio. The organization spans mechanical, electrical, controls, commissioning, troubleshooting, operational analytics, retrofit engineering, reporting, and process‑improvement disciplines.

The Controls Field Engineering function provides the engineering layer between day‑to‑day operational response, controls service and deployment, and product or design authority. The team focuses on complex post‑event analysis, engineering design, code and settings standardization, first‑of‑kind pilots, field feedback, and scalable corrective solutions.

It partners closely with operational, service, deployment, design, cybersecurity, and product teams while remaining accountable for controls engineering quality and continuous improvement.

The team values technical depth, disciplined change management, clear ownership, evidence‑based decision‑making, knowledge sharing, and solutions that can be reused across regions.

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Controls Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automation Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline, with 4+ years of relevant controls experience; or equivalent practical experience.
  • 2+ years of hands‑on experience designing, configuring, programming, installing, commissioning, optimizing, or servicing BMS, EPMS, PLC, SCADA, or comparable industrial and building automation systems.
  • Experience developing or reviewing control Sequences of Operations, logic, code, points lists, drawings, wiring diagrams, network topologies, test procedures, or commissioning documentation.
  • Experience troubleshooting controls systems and performing structured root‑cause analysis using trend data, alarms, event logs, field observations, and equipment evidence.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical findings clearly in written reports, design reviews, and stakeholder discussions.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 6+ years of experience in controls design, programming, commissioning, service, optimization, or critical‑infrastructure engineering.
  • Experience with controls in data centers, semiconductor facilities, hospitals, utilities, industrial plants, or other mission‑critical environments.
  • Experience standardizing controls code, developing reusable templates or libraries, and managing configuration or version control across multiple facilities or equipment variants.
  • Strong understanding of controls communications and networking, including protocols such as BACnet, Modbus, MQTT, OPC, or comparable industrial protocols.
  • Experience using Python, SQL, statistical methods, and visualization platforms to analyze high‑volume time‑series data from BMS, EPMS, SCADA, data historians, or other operational technology systems.
  • Experience using generative AI or agentic tools to analyze technical documents, controls code, alarms, event data, and reports or to automate engineering workflows, with appropriate data governance, cybersecurity controls, human verification, and validation of outputs.
