Opdenergy is a growing independent renewable energy producer (IPP) with presence in Europe, United States and Latin America with more than 19 years of experience. The company develops, builds, finances, manages, and operates high quality renewable energy projects in several countries, with a portfolio of 2,6 GW (1,3 operational and + 1,3 ready to build / under construction) assets in operations and construction, whole portfolio under development sums up to over 18 GW.
We are looking for a BESS & Hybridization Engineer , based in Madrid , to join our dynamic global team. In close coordination with our Business Development and Construction teams, you will lead the engineering activities of renewable energy projects , with a special focus on hybridization and battery implementation .
What You’ll Do?
- Provide technical and design support to the Construction and Development departments for Construction and Development departmenthybrid renewable plants (PV + Storage, Wind + Storage), optimizing configurations to maximize yield and flexibility while minimizing CAPEX and OPEX.
- Control and review basic and detailed engineering of hybrid and BESS systems, identifying deviations and proposing optimizations in sizing, topology, and operational strategies.
- Support energy modeling and simulation (PVsyst, HOMER, Python-based tools, etc.) to assess system performance, grid compliance, and revenue potential.
- Interface with battery manufacturers, inverter suppliers, and EMS / BMS integrators to validate technical specs, performance guarantees, and integration requirements.
- Collaborate with the Grid Connection team to evaluate hybrid system behavior under grid codes, performing studies on power flow, transient stability, and frequency response.
- Provide technical input during procurement and EPC tendering, ensuring supplier proposals comply with company standards and project requirements.
- Support the O&M department in analyzing performance data, degradation behavior, and identifying root causes of hybrid / BESS issues.
- Evaluate emerging energy storage technologies (Li-ion, flow batteries, hybrid inverters, hydrogen systems) and propose innovation and cost-reduction strategies.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
- Strong understanding of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) architecture, sizing, and components (cells, modules, racks, PCS, BMS, EMS).
- In-depth knowledge of hybrid plant operation (solar + storage, wind + storage, microgrids).
- Solid grasp of grid interconnection requirements, power quality, and ancillary services (frequency regulation, black start, etc.).
- Proficiency with simulation and optimization tools such as PVsyst, HOMER, MATLAB / Simulink, or Python.
- Knowledge of battery degradation models, thermal management, and international safety standards (UL 9540, IEC 62619, etc.).
- Understanding of energy markets and hybrid system economics (arbitrage, capacity markets, peak shaving).
- Familiarity with communication protocols and SCADA / EMS integration principles.
- Awareness of regulatory frameworks and incentive schemes for BESS in different markets.
- Fluent English, both spoken and written.
- Proficiency in PVsyst, HOMER, MATLAB, or equivalent tools.
- Advanced skills in MS Office (Excel) and data analysis tools (Python, Power BI preferred).
- Excellent working knowledge of CAD, Civil 3D, or equivalent design software.
What We Offer?
