Job summary

Uber Technologies Inc. is seeking a senior backend engineer for our Stateful Platform in Aarhus, Denmark. You will design, build, and own infrastructure that runs global stateful systems across cloud and on‑prem environments, with a focus on reliability and scalability.

You will mentor peers, drive technical direction, and collaborate across sites (SF, Amsterdam, Seattle, Bangalore) to ship practical solutions at speed while engaging with the Aarhus tech community.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional software development experience.
• Proficiency in at least one backend language (Go, Java, Python).
• Experience with software engineering fundamentals including testing and quality documentation.
• Technical depth in building or managing distributed systems at scale.
• Demonstrated ability to lead technical direction and navigate ambiguity.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain automation frameworks that deploy and run all database engines globally, ensuring high availability across on-prem and multiple cloud environments.
• Solve high-impact infrastructure problems, such as automating kernel upgrades or storage cluster expansions across millions of containers.
• Build and own services written in Go, focusing on system reliability, resource forecasting, and intelligent placement to maximize utilization.
• Navigate tech debt and shifting priorities, ensuring code changes are backed by rigorous testing with bias for action.
• Unblock fleet-wide efficiency by optimizing scheduling to reduce manual on-call operations through automation.
• Lead through influence by mentoring peers and collaborating across global sites to ship practical solutions quickly.
• Engage with the local community by participating in or leading tech meetups at Aarhus to share knowledge.

About the Role

Engineering at Uber means building for real-world impact under real-world constraints. You’ll be responsible for the infrastructure that runs Uber’s global stateful systems - over 20 types of technologies including MySQL, Redis, and Kafka - across 50,000+ hosts and exabytes of data.

This role is based in our Aarhus, Denmark office, a key global hub for Uber’s Infrastructure and Platform teams. In Aarhus, we don’t just use technology; we build the core systems that keep Uber moving. The work is massive in scale and high in stakes. You will navigate the tension between moving fast to increase fleet-wide efficiency and maintaining the extreme reliability required for systems that never sleep.

We are looking for an engineer eager to grow into a role with greater technical ownership and leadership. As our Stateful Platform team continues to scale, we need someone who can go beyond execution to formulate a north star vision for our products. You will be expected to drive the team toward that goal independently, staying steady through the regular disruptions that come with operating at our scale. What You’ll Do

• Unblock fleet-wide efficiency by optimizing scheduling, with the goal of eliminating manual on-call operations through automation.
• Lead through influence by mentoring peers and collaborating across global engineering sites (SF, Amsterdam, Seattle, Bangalore) to ship practical solutions at speed.
• Engage with the local community by participating in or leading tech meetups hosted at our Aarhus office to share knowledge and drive engineering excellence locally.

Basic Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional software development experience.
• Proficiency in at least one backend language (e.g., Go, Java, Python).
• Experience with software engineering fundamentals, including testing methodologies and quality documentation.
• Technical depth in building or managing distributed systems at scale.
• Demonstrated ability to lead technical direction and help a team navigate through ambiguity and complex organizational changes.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with containerization and orchestration (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
• Knowledge of database and stateful systems (e.g., MySQL, Kafka, HDFS, or Redis).
• A mindset for automation—specifically a track record of replacing manual processes with self-healing systems.
