Aalborg University invites a postdoctoral researcher to join the Center for Clinical Data Science (CLINDA) in Aalborg for AI-assisted clinical decision support. The two-year position includes close collaboration with clinicians and data partners to develop interactive AI agents grounded in real-world patient data.
The role emphasises NLP, ML, Python prototyping, and strong mathematical foundations, with Danish language skills considered a plus.
Afdeling: Department of Clinical Medicine
At the Center for Clinical Data Science (CLINDA), Department of Clinical Medicine, Aalborg University, we are looking for a full time postdoctoral researcher to join us in developing AI-based systems for clinical decision support in hospitals, starting December 1, 2026, or soon hereafter.
The duration of the position is two years, with the possibility of extension.
Subject
Clinical decision support systems can assist healthcare professionals in diagnosing and monitoring health conditions by integrating information from multiple sources, including clinical notes, laboratory and pathology results, imaging (e.g., X-ray, CT, MRI, and PET), clinical guidelines, and coding resources. Such systems can support clinical decision‑making by helping clinicians synthesize heterogeneous clinical information and knowledge.
Your work tasks
The aim of the position is to explore and develop AI agent technologies that can assist healthcare experts in daily clinical problem solving, especially in deciding on the most appropriate next steps in the diagnostic pathway. A central task will be to develop an interactive framework based on large language models (LLMs) and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) techniques, capable of synthesizing information from the diverse data types, and further help interpret the findings in the context of individual patients’ profile and history. Important research questions include how to design the agent framework; how to represent, retrieve, and utilize information from the different data modalities to ground the system’s reasoning in clinical evidence; how to best incorporate human-in-the-loop (HITL) functionality so users can interact with the agent’s reasoning process; and how to enable forecasting and simulations over multiple time steps.
The project will be conducted in close collaboration with clinical partners, providing access to data‑rich healthcare environments and established diagnostic workflows. One key partner is the Diagnostic Center (DC) in Farsø, Denmark. This setting offers a unique opportunity to develop and evaluate AI‑based clinical decision support systems using real‑world patient data from individuals undergoing diagnostic evaluation for serious conditions, including cancer and other complex diseases.
The position is based in the Clinical AI Group at the Center for Clinical Data Science (CLINDA), Aalborg University and Aalborg University hospital. The successful candidate will be working in close collaboration with healthcare domain experts from clinical departments at hospitals in the North Denmark Region, including Farsø DC.
We are looking for a motivated candidate with the following background, skills, and qualities:
Qualification requirements
Appointmentaspostdoc requires academic qualifications at PhD level.

This center provides an excellent environment to conduct innovative research with fellow PhD students, postdocs and more senior researchers, and also promote social interactions.
The Department of Clinical Medicine provides research‑based teaching across all disciplines of the medical degree programme and conducts research within the clinical specialties.
The department collaborates closely with hospitals in the North Denmark Region and general practice in both teaching and research. Medical students receive instruction at several hospital sites and in general practice throughout the region.
The department is affiliated with approximately 40 research units, each representing a specific medical specialty. In addition, the department is also associated with several other research units and centres. The majority of the department’s staff hold concurrent clinical positions alongside their academic appointments.
