Job summary

DTU Management invites applications for a 3-year PhD scholarship linked to the project Brains in Motion, carried out at DTU Management in Denmark with collaboration from Imperial College London. Supervisors include Rico Krueger and Carlos L. Azevedo, with Professor Aldo Faisal involved as international partner.

The project unites transportation science, AI, neuroscience and behavioural experimentation, offering strong empirical work and international training in an interdisciplinary setting.

Qualifications

  • Two-year master's degree or equivalent in a relevant quantitatively oriented field.
  • Strong quantitative and programming skills.
  • Experience with Python, R, Julia or MATLAB.
  • Knowledge of behavioural modelling, reinforcement learning, probabilistic modelling, machine learning or statistical inference.
  • Interest in experimental design and human-subject studies.
  • Experience with eye-tracking, EEG, physiological sensing, VR experiments or field experiments, or motivation to learn these methods.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
  • Be well-versed in the productive and responsible use of AI technologies.
  • Ability to work independently and in an interdisciplinary international research team.

Responsibilities

  • Develop learning-based behavioural models of navigation, route choice and adaptation.
  • Apply reinforcement learning, probabilistic modelling and computational neuroscience to human mobility behaviour.
  • Model how people build and update internal representations of urban space.
  • Integrate behavioural data with neurophysiological markers such as eye movements, cognitive load and EEG-based measures.
  • Design and conduct immersive virtual reality experiments and naturalistic field studies.
  • Study behavioural adaptation to changes such as route closures and new mobility technologies.
  • Translate model insights into tools and knowledge relevant for urban planning and transport system design.
