Job description

Do you love designing clean game architecture, building multiplayer systems that run smoothly, and helping a team of programmers make the right technical decisions? Great! Let’s talk.

Triband is the award-winning studio behind the WHAT THE? comedy game series, played by millions worldwide. From our home in central Copenhagen, more than 60 wonderful humans are united by a simple mission: to make everyone laugh.

We're building something unannounced, exciting, thoroughly goofy, and built to be played together online. We're now looking for a Lead Game Programmer to help building the underlying systems that make it all work, from the core architecture to the multiplayer tech that connects our players. You'll stay hands-on in the code and the Unity editor while helping the programming team make good technical decisions, stay aligned, and build systems that support creative experimentation. And just to be very clear: this is a technical leadership role, not a people-management position.

Here’s what that looks like day to day
  • In collaboration with game designers, artists, and other programmers, you’ll build new features and systems and continuously iterate on improvements. We all work in Unity with C#, with every team member hands-on in the editor
  • You’ll set and communicate the project’s technical direction, turning creative goals and production needs into clear technical priorities
  • You’ll help the programming team make architectural decisions, align around shared patterns, and navigate trade-offs between long-term code health and short-term needs
  • You’ll review and improve technical solutions, share best practices, and support other programmers without becoming a gatekeeper or bottleneck
  • You’ll proactively identify technical risks, messy systems, and missing foundations, and take responsibility for addressing them at the right time
  • Overall, you’ll make sure the project is technically healthy and maintain the codebase in a way that makes it easy for others to build on
This includes things like...
  • Designing an architecture that allows for easy gameplay implementation and flexibility
  • Implementing and maintaining online features such as matchmaking, invites and friends
  • Profiling and improving network performance, bandwidth and latency, and making sure the game holds up on real-world connections
  • Breaking down complex technical challenges, helping decide what to prioritise, and ensuring important decisions are understood by the people they affect
  • Staying close to the actual game: writing production code, debugging difficult problems, and improving systems as the project evolves
You’re a great match if
  • You have at least ten years of professional game development experience across multiple shipped games and different stages of development, including significant technical ownership or leadership on a project
  • You have experience setting technical direction and helping a programming team make and implement architectural decisions, with strong judgment in balancing flexibility, maintainability, performance and the needs of a creative production
  • You're highly proficient in C# and have deep knowledge of the Unity engine and editor
  • You've shipped at least one online multiplayer game, had real ownership of its networking/online systems, and have hands-on experience with a Unity multiplayer framework (e.g., Coherence)
  • You communicate clearly and can explain technical decisions and trade-offs to programmers and non-programmers alike
Nice to haves
  • You have experience shipping iOS and macOS apps, including hands-on integration of Apple platform services such as GameKit and the Game Controller framework using Xcode and Swift
  • Experience with backend services, dedicated servers or cloud hosting for online games
  • Interest in multiplayer game design and social features
  • Experience working with automated build pipelines such as Jenkins
  • Experience building systemic or open-world games
What always matters to us at Triband
  • You thrive in taking ownership of your area: you spot problems, seek advice when needed, and implement creative solutions that push projects forward
  • You’re motivated by collaboration, mutual respect, inclusiveness and creativity while actively contributing to sustaining that culture
  • You believe games are made by teams, not rockstars and that great ideas can come from anyone
  • You bring curiosity, generosity, and flexibility, along with strong opinions, especially when they come with reasoning, openness, and a willingness to actually test them
  • You love exploration and experimentation but don’t get too precious when the evidence tells you you’re wrong
  • You value a positive work environment and contribute to keeping the studio a fun and supportive place to be
Practicalities
  • We work on-site at our cozy office in central Copenhagen.
  • For this role we also consider people located outside of Denmark and provide financial (and moral!) support with visa application and relocation.
  • We work a 37-hour work week, with core hours 10-15, and the freedom to start and finish anywhere between 7 and 18.
  • Our working language is English.
We offer
  • Silly but ambitious projects, and the chance to work on and impact great games that reach millions of players.
  • A playful and ambitious work environment where experimentation is encouraged.
  • Friendly and kind colleagues who love making each other laugh as much as making games.
  • A professional development budget to invest in your growth.
  • Social activities like Friday bars, hobby nights, board game nights, team events, you name it.
  • Daily lunch at a local restaurant just a walk across the lakes away, with plant-based options (and soft ice on Thursdays).
  • Six weeks of vacation (five standard plus one extra on us).
  • Paid parental leave at full salary for the periods covered by state reimbursement.
  • Child's first sick day on us, no questions asked.
  • Pension plan and private health insurance.
  • Endless amounts of Faxe Kondi.
WHAT THE TRIBAND?

Triband is the award-winning studio behind the WHAT THE? comedy game series, which is played by millions worldwide. From our home in central Copenhagen, more than 60 wonderful humans are united by our mission to make everyone laugh. To do so, we focus on exploring comedy through gameplay. We put people first and strive to create a safe and creative working environment. We believe that teams, not individuals, make games, and we believe diversity makes for better teams. For these reasons, we look for people who bring new perspectives and will challenge us and our way of doing things.
