Job Description:

The department of Digital Design and Processing in the Institute of Active Polymers at Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon invites applications for a Research Scientist in computational and experimental implants research and development.

Our department collaborates closely with Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, developing clinically led, materials-oriented solutions for healthcare issues, especially in cardiac and vascular fields. We aim to develop validated Digital Twins to improve implant design and clinical outcomes. We have excellent infrastructure for digital design, rapid prototyping, and material characterization. We seek motivated scientists to join our team.

The position is initially limited to 24 months (starting as soon as possible). Equal opportunity employment is a priority. The full-time position (39 h/week) is also shareable.

Responsibilities include:
  1. Developing Digital Twins of materials and implants with support from colleagues and external partners.
  2. Creating computational models of cardiac devices using Finite Element software (ABAQUS or Ansys), including user-defined materials and subroutines.
  3. Modeling of materials and multifunctional materials (polymers, bioresorbable polymers, piezoelectric polymers).
  4. Conducting multiscale and cross-scale materials modeling in cooperation with colleagues.
  5. Fabricating and processing multifunctional materials (3D printing, electrospinning, bioprinting, extrusion, casting).
  6. Identifying standards for material and device development/testing and developing protocols.
  7. Preparing testing protocols and reports per norms and regulatory guidelines.
  8. Characterizing material properties via mechanical, structural, chemical, thermal, electrical, and piezoelectric methods.
  9. Validating computational models with experimental data.
  10. Supporting the design of cardiac implants through model development.
  11. Preparing invention disclosures and patent applications.
  12. Securing follow-up funding via grant applications.
  13. Participating in scientific conferences, trade fairs, and conventions.
  14. Supervising students, interns, and mentoring PhD candidates.
  15. Researching relevant literature and existing IP.
  16. Preparing scientific and business presentations.
  17. Engaging with companies, universities, and institutions for collaboration.
  18. Procurement of materials and consumables.
  19. Participating in meetings and training programs.
  20. Documenting developed models, protocols, and devices.
  21. Preparing progress reports.
  22. Training staff and interns in model and protocol use.
