Research Associate (Doctoral Candidate) (f/m/d)

The University of Bremen at MARUM – Center for Marine Environmental Sciences, within the Cluster of Excellence “The Ocean Floor – Earth's Uncharted Interface”, is seeking a position subject to approval of funds, with a start date of January 1, 2026 at the earliest.

Salary: German Salary Scale 13 TV‑L/TVöD (dependent on the project partner). Working hours: 75 % of regular weekly hours (29.4 h per week). Contract duration: fixed‑term 4 years, until at most December 31, 2029 (see §2 WissZeitVG).

This role supports the Cluster’s goal of doctoral training in marine biogeochemistry, marine geosciences, marine (micro)biology, and (paleo)climatology, with structured interdisciplinary projects and opportunities for research stays at partner institutions.

Cluster Overview

The Cluster of Excellence funds projects that (i) decipher transport processes of biogenic particles to the ocean floor under changing climate conditions, (ii) balance the transfer of carbon and other elements between the ocean floor and seawater, (iii) investigate how ocean-floor ecosystems respond to environmental changes, and (iv) develop scenarios for a “warmer world” from climate archives using climate models.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct scientific research in applied mathematics and non‑linear system dynamics.
  • Analyze numerical model experiments, including climate and ecosystem models.
  • Write scientific publications and present at international conferences.
Qualifications
  • Completed Master or equivalent in physics, mathematics, meteorology, or a related discipline.
Benefits
  • Secure salary and statutory health and social insurance.
  • Mentorship by experienced scientists and participation in a large international network of doctoral researchers.
  • Flexible working hours with the possibility to work remotely.
  • 30 days of vacation.
  • Health management: discounted fitness programmes and health courses.
  • Easy access by public transport or bicycle.
Diversity & Inclusion
  • Applications are encouraged from all genders; a higher proportion of women is strongly desired.
  • All applicants are welcomed regardless of gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion/belief, disability, age, sexual orientation, and identity.
  • Disabled persons with essentially equal professional and personal qualifications will be given priority when applying.
