Better together. For life.

At the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE), we are committed to excellence in research, education, and comprehensive healthcare across our clinics. Every day, our team of approximately 16,100 dedicated employees works to make the world a healthier place. Our goal is to be one of the leading university hospitals while also being the best employer in our industry. At UKE, we believe that meaningful and successful work should align with our employees' personal needs and individual lifestyles. Just as diverse as these needs are, so too is the variety of personalized solutions we offer.

Welcome to the UKE.
Main tasks

Our laboratory is broadly interested in how environmental cues - including the diet, social interactions, xenobiotic or pathogen exposure, among others - are integrated by the brain and translated into neuroendocrine output to instruct adaptive physiology and behavior. Conversely, we seek to understand how internal states shape our physiological responses to the same cues. Our research is based on the premise that understanding physiology is a prerequisite for making sense of pathology. We do not focus on a single organ system or clinical entity, but instead, choose clinically relevant problems based on our curiosity. This approach has resulted in two international patents within the last two years. Our lab is embedded in a highly interdisciplinary environment spanning clinicians, immunologists, infectious disease and metabolism researchers and physically embedded in the newly built Hamburg Center of Translational Immunology (HCTI). We have access to state-of-the-art core facilities and closely collaborate with a range of different laboratories including several labs at Yale School of Medicine. Scientists from your group will join cross-institutional lab meetings and have the option to visit some collaborators on-site to acquire new technical skills, if necessary. We are a young, dynamic and highly motivated team that highly values different perspectives on a given topic.

Responsibilities include
  • Experimental in vivo and in vitro work including planning of experimental design, statistical analysis of results and interpretation of results
  • Establishing new techniques in-house
  • Contributing to a stimulating, curiosity-driven, collaborative research environment
  • Assist staff with mouse colony management
  • Scientific publishing

This position is temporary for three years due to third-party funding.

Your Profile
  • Completed academic studies (Master or equivalent)
  • A doctoral in biology, veterinary medicine or related fields
  • A background in neurosciences, or neuroscience-related fields is favorable
  • At least 3 years of experience in working with mice
  • Successful completion of animal training courses (ideally, FELASA C equivalent)
  • Curiosity and passion for scientific discovery
  • Broad scientific interests

Your application should include a publication record demonstrating successful performance of high-quality research as well as 2 letters of recommendation from former mentors.

Oure Offer
  • Attractive compensation according to TVöD/VKA
  • Secure employment with meaningful work and respectful collaboration
  • Comprehensive onboarding and open knowledge exchange within the team
  • Extensive training and further education programs at our UKE Academy for Education and Careers
  • Opportunities to contribute to our “UKE INside” personnel policy through cross-professional and cross-hierarchical projects
  • Sustainable travel: subsidies for the Deutschlandticket as a job ticket, and Dr. Bike bicycle service
  • Family-friendly working environment: cooperation on childcare, free vacation childcare, advice for employees with relatives in need of care
  • Excellent health, wellness, and sports programs
