Position Overview
For one of our biopharma clients in Stuttgart, we are seeking a Head of Data Science Solutions (m/w/d). This is a 100% remote role, open to candidates anywhere within the EU or Great Britain. In this strategic leadership position, you will drive customer‑facing data science initiatives, delivering advanced modeling and digital twin projects that provide actionable insights for process development and cell culture optimisation. You will act as a trusted advisor in technical and commercial discussions, support pre‑sales engagements, and collaborate with product and research teams to shape solutions. Leading a team of Data Scientists, you'll ensure scientific rigor, strong client engagement, and business growth. This role requires deep expertise in data science, bioprocesses, and proven leadership skills.
Key Responsibilities
Customer Project Leadership
- Oversee the execution of customer modelling projects from data acquisition to model delivery and interpretation.
- Ensure project outcomes meet scientific, technical, and contractual objectives with clear customer value.
- Serve as the primary scientific contact for key accounts, maintaining excellent relationships and communication.
- Translate complex modelling outcomes into decision‑ready insights for scientists and executives.
Scientific and Technical Excellence
- Guide the design, calibration, and validation of hybrid models combining mechanistic and AI‑based approaches.
- Ensure scientific rigor in data handling, model interpretation, and documentation across all projects.
- Drive innovation in modelling workflows and virtual experimentation strategies.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of our hybrid modelling framework and internal knowledge base.
- Provide scientific feedback to the Product and R&D teams to align future developments with customer needs.
Business Development and Customer Growth
- Identify new opportunities within existing accounts by understanding customer goals and process challenges.
- Collaborate with the product and research teams to define and position follow‑up projects.
- Contribute in pre‑sales discussions, technical presentations, and proposal preparation.
- Represent us at conferences, customer meetings, and industry events to expand visibility and engagement.
Team Leadership and Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop Data Scientists, ensuring high scientific and professional standards.
- Establish best practices for modelling workflows, data analysis, and scientific communication.
- Foster a culture of accountability, ownership, and continuous learning across the team.
- Evaluate team performance, identify development needs, and drive upskilling initiatives.
Strategic Collaboration
- Partner with the Head of AI & Hybrid Modelling, Head of Software Architecture & Engineering, and Head of Product to align project delivery with product roadmap and technological capabilities.
- Represent the professional services organisation in internal planning and customer strategy sessions.
- Contribute to strategic discussions on scaling our modelling services and automation of project workflows.
Skills & Responsibilities
- Proven expertise in data science, hybrid modelling, and bioprocess analysis.
- Strong proficiency in Python and ML/data libraries (NumPy, pandas, SciPy, PyTorch, JAX, scikit‑learn).
- Experience designing and calibrating hybrid or mechanistic models of biological systems.
- Deep understanding of cell culture processes, bioreactor systems, and bioprocess data.
- Strong skills in data visualisation, statistical analysis, and result storytelling.
- Familiarity with cloud platforms and collaborative modelling environments.
Soft Skills
- Exceptional communication and presentation skills, engaging confidently with both technical and executive audiences.
- Strong commercial sense – able to identify value for customers and articulate it effectively.
- Leadership and mentoring capabilities with a high sense of accountability and ownership.
- Structured, analytical, and capable of critical scientific reasoning.
- Comfortable operating autonomously in a remote, international environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- PhD or MSc in Data Science, Systems Biology, Bioprocess Engineering, or a related field.
- 8+ years of experience in applied data science or hybrid modelling roles, ideally in biopharma.
- Demonstrated success leading customer projects and expanding customer relationships.
- Prior experience in technical sales, pre‑sales, or consulting.
- Strong record of scientific communication (publications, presentations, or workshops).
