Offer Description

Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) is one of the largest universities in Germany. The position is to be filled in Faculty 09: Chemistry, Pharmacy, Geography and Earth Sciences, in the Department of Chemistry.

You will support the research group of Prof. Dr. Sönnichsen in teaching and research in the field of nano-bio-technology. Specifically, the position includes the following activities:

  • Initiation and coordination of research projects as well as participation in research in the area of biosensing and single-particle spectroscopy, the synthesis and functionalization of plasmonic nanoparticles, and the theoretical modeling of the corresponding processes.
  • Development and implementation of your own projects as well as academic supervision of a research sub-group.
  • Project and personnel management as well as coordination and academic support of collaborative project proposals.
  • Oversight of the research group’s scientific instruments and methodological advancement of new characterization methods.
  • Planning and delivery of selected theoretical and practical courses in general chemistry, physical chemistry, and especially nano-bio technology for the Chemistry program.

In addition to the general requirements according to public services law, applicants must meet the recruitment requirements stipulated in § 57 of the Hochschulgesetz of Rhineland-Palatinate.

  • A successfully completed scientific university degree in Chemistry or a related subject
  • A first-class doctorate in chemistry or a related subject, specific to the position
  • Post-graduation at least 2.5 years of experience in a primary occupation
  • Very good knowledge in the field of nano-bio technology (in particular, single-particle spectroscopy of nanoparticles, determination of linewidths and resonance frequencies of individual particles, excellent knowledge of the software product MATLAB), evidenced by scientific publications
  • Many years of experience in single-particle spectroscopy, especially plasmonics, and in medical diagnostics
  • Enthusiasm for conveying fundamental practical procedures, functionalization and characterization methods (e.g., working with dark-field microscopes, nanoparticle syntheses, complex data analyses with MATLAB, and communicating within an interdisciplinary research group and with students)
  • Ideally, experience supervising academic theses
  • Extensive teaching experience, particularly evidenced by supervisinglab courses, redesigning experiments, accompanying seminars, exercisesand drafting examinations
  • Excellent German and English skills, spoken and written
  • High intercultural competence
  • A very high level of motivation, commitment, and ability to work in a team
