Offer Description

The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of future technologies, energy and climate, health innovation and fundamentals of nature. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore, about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether, PSI employs 2300 people.

We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow to join theAdvanced Muon Spectroscopy (AMS) project at the Laboratory for Muon Spin Spectroscopy (LMU). The project is dedicated to developing a novel method for muon spin spectroscopy usingmonolithic Si-pixel detectors. This innovative approach aims to increase data collection rates (40k⇒ >400kmuons/second), enable measurements on smaller samples (16mm2⇒ 1mm2), and achieve lateral resolution on the millimeter scale.

This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge instrumentation and methodology for muon spectroscopy, while working in a collaborative, international research environment.

Postdoctoral Fellow

  • Design, simulate, and build a Si-pixel-based muon spin spectrometer
  • Develop and optimize software for vertex reconstruction and data analysis
  • Participate in and lead muon spin spectroscopy (μSR) experiments
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners on integration, validation, and deployment
  • Strong programming and data analysis skills; proficiency in C++, Python, ROOT preferred
  • Experience with detector technology and data acquisition systems is a strong asset
  • Background in condensed matter physics, material science, or related fields is advantageous
  • Proficiency in English (spoken and written)
  • A proactive, collaborative attitude and willingness to contribute to team goals
