Jobbeschreibung

Join our dynamic team at ETH Student Project House and help students bring their ideas to life through hands-on prototyping and with your metal working expertise.

At the ETH Student Project House (SPH) we inspire and empower students to cultivate a mindset of makers and innovators. We believe that by exploring their ideas and developing their own projects, students gain valuable hands-on experience and learn important skills for their future. This is why we’ve created an ecosystem where students (Bachelor, Master, and Doctoral students) are encouraged to ideate, build prototypes, test, and refine them.

Our interdisciplinary team of 30 people provides students that want to pursue extracurricular projects of various types and scales with a comprehensive range of support. On the one hand, we have a coworking space and offer coaching. On the other hand, we have a greatly equipped Makerspace that gives students access to the tools and equipment they need to prototype.

As our projects are building more and more prototypes, we’re now looking for a metalworker in the Makerspace. Read on to see if that might be you!

Project background

You’ll work in one of the most inspiring spaces at ETH Zürich, surrounded by 3D-printers, whiteboards, self-designed furniture, and plants.

  • We’re based at two locations: ETH Hönggerberg and ETH Centre campus.
  • We work in the same open space as our project teams and meet with everyone at eye level. The individuals we work with are from a diverse range of backgrounds and study disciplines, which is why we communicate in English. As the projects we support are extracurricular, most of our events and training offers take place in the late afternoon, in the evening, and occasionally at weekends.

This is a40% position, and initially we offer a 1-year contract (with the possibility for prolongation).

You’ll be part of the Makerspace team with five people, and you will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Machines. You are responsible for operating, maintaining, tidying and cleaning our metal area and metal machines including the following: plasma cutter, water jet cutter, sheet metal tools, welding (TIG, MIG, arc, gas), etc.
  • Introductions,Supervision and Safety. You’ll introduce students to the metal workingtools and machines, and you supervise them while they are usingthem. Very important: you are responsible for their safety.
  • Coaching. You’ll support early-stage student projects with your technical expertise.
  • Workshops. You’ll first co-facilitate and then facilitate workshops in the metal working area. We are more than happy if you write to us how we can extend our offer with your expertise.

Profile

We’re looking for someone who brings both technical skill and a passion for mentoring:

  • You have done an apprenticeship as a metalworker (Polymechanikerin / Polymechaniker,Metallbauerin / Metallbauer) and must hold a Swiss Federal Certificate of Competence (EFZ)
  • You have a strong affinity for tools, machinery, and hands-on work
  • You feel confident being assertive with safety rules, taking responsibility and keep our students safe
  • You like realizing your own projects – including learning from failure
  • You enjoy working with students, supporting their growth, and you show flexibility with their needs
  • You feel comfortable speaking in front of groups and leading workshops
  • You are fluent in English (C1) and proficient in German (B2 or higher), both spoken and written
  • You are familiar with modern communication tools and standard workshop infrastructure

A note: research indicates that women and individuals from marginalized groups tend to apply only when they meet all the criteria. If you believe you’re qualified, but don’t necessarily check every box, please submit an application
