Job description

The Ocean Freight Pricing Analyst owns the review and validation of our service contracts with the major ocean carriers, making sure every rate, surcharge and note we buy against is complete, current and correctly applied within our rate engine.

The role tracks how base ocean freight and surcharges develop over the contract year, sources surcharge levels from carrier tariffs and publications, and keeps our rate data clean and usable for sales and management.

Key Responsibilities
Contract review
  • Review ocean service contracts and amendments with the major carriers (e.g. MSC, Maersk, CMA CGM, Hapag-Lloyd, ONE, Evergreen, COSCO/OOCL, ZIM, HMM, Yang Ming).
  • Check rates, validity dates, commodities, origins/destinations, equipment types, minimum quantity commitments (MQC) and service scope against what was negotiated.
  • Interpret contract notes, rules and special clauses (e.g. subject-to vs. inclusive charges, free time, routing, transshipment, cargo restrictions) and flag gaps, errors or unfavourable terms.
  • Track amendments and filings, and keep a clear version history of each contract.
  • Identify which surcharges apply under each contract and track their levels over time: BAF/bunker, emergency bunker, low-sulphur (LSS), EU ETS, CAF, PSS, war risk, piracy, port congestion, THC (OTHC/DTHC), ISPS, documentation and equipment imbalance charges, among others.
  • Source current surcharge levels from carrier online tariffs, customer advisories, rate sheets and contract notes, and verify they are applied as the contract allows.
Data management and reporting
  • Build and maintain the rate and surcharge database within the pricing system "rate engine", with consistent structure, naming and validity tracking.
Requirements
  • 3+ years in ocean freight pricing, procurement or contract management at a carrier, NVOCC, freight forwarder or shipper.
  • Hands-on experience reading and working with carrier service contracts, including rate appendices, general and specific notes, and amendments.
  • Solid knowledge of ocean surcharges, how they are calculated and when they apply.
  • Knows where to obtain surcharge and tariff data: carrier online tariffs and rate portals, customer advisories, published rules tariffs and FMC-filed tariffs.
  • Advanced Excel: pivot tables, XLOOKUP/VLOOKUP/INDEX-MATCH, nested logic, conditional formatting, data validation and large-dataset handling.
