The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) is hiring a Senior Audit Manager, Banking within the Internal Audit unit.

This role is offered as a three-year fixed term contract.

This role is based in Basel, Switzerland; however, thanks to our status as an international organization, we can hire globally and welcome applications from candidates of all nationalities and located anywhere in the world. Purpose of the job

The Senior Audit Manager will provide high-quality audit and advisory services to Senior Management and the Audit Committee. The role will ensure relevant risks are identified by the business and mitigating processes and controls are robust, efficient, and aligned with the Bank’s objectives. The role will be delivered in accordance with the International Professional Practices Framework (IPPF) in a manner that conforms with the Global International Internal Audit Standards.

Principal Accountabilities

Plan, lead, and execute risk-based internal audits for Banking activities, including Treasury, Asset Management, and trading-related functions. Ensure comprehensive coverage of front-, middle-, and back-office operations, with a focus on evaluating key areas such as portfolio management, asset allocation strategies, trading book management and oversight, and the effectiveness of controls, risk management processes, and governance frameworks.

Assess trading and institutional client activities, including fixed income, FX, derivatives, commodities, private assets, structured products, hedging strategies, and sales activities. Apply deep product knowledge acquired in top-tier investment banks or wholesale banking environments to identify control gaps, emerging risks, and improvement opportunities.

Perform detailed reviews of trading books and risk management frameworks, including market risk, credit risk, operational risk, and liquidity risk. Assess the effectiveness of hedging strategies and the accuracy of risk metrics such as Value-at-Risk (VaR), stress testing, and scenario analysis.

Prepare high-quality audit reports with actionable recommendations, maintaining rigorous documentation standards and aligning with professional practices.

Build strong stakeholder relationships, offering valuable insights and contributing to the development of the annual Audit Plan.

Monitor the implementation of audit recommendations to ensure timely resolution and provide strategic leadership within the Internal Audit team.

Foster collaboration, inclusion, and high performance while mentoring team members and driving operational initiatives.

As part of the IA Management team, provide leadership, drive strategic and operational initiatives and projects as deemed necessary.

Required work experience, skills and qualifications

Work Experience

10–15 years of progressive audit experience in financial services, with a proven track record in wholesale banking, institutional trading, and global markets activities.

Candidates must demonstrate hands‑on experience with trading desks, institutional client services, wealth management and structured products gained at top‑tier investment banks or commercial banks with a strong institutional focus. Experience in IFIs is only relevant if it includes substantial exposure to trading or institutional client activities.

At least 5–10 years in a leadership role.

Big 4 experience and Audit Committee engagement are advantageous.

Skills

Deep expertise in trading products (e.g., fixed income, FX, derivatives, commodities, private assets, investment funds) and their associated risks.

Strong understanding of trading book management, risk metrics (e.g., VaR, stress testing), and hedging strategies.

Clear knowledge of regulatory frameworks such as Basel III.

Advanced data analytics proficiency, with experience leveraging tools and technology to enhance audit processes. Proficiency in using Bloomberg and Reuters is an advantage.

Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders and deliver results in a high-pressure, multicultural environment.

Qualifications

Relevant university degree, with CFA or FRM mandatory. Additional certifications like CIA, CISA, ACA, ACCA, or CPA are an added advantage.
