Qualifikationen

  • Advanced university degree in communication, journalism, international relations, or public administration, or a first-level degree with additional qualifying experience.
  • Minimum seven years of progressive experience in public information, journalism, or public administration.
  • Experience editing and developing communications for intergovernmental bodies and social media strategy.

Organizational context

This position is within the United Nations Information Service at Geneva (UNIS), reporting to the Chief of the Press and External Relations Section. The role operates under the overall supervision of the Director of UNIS, contributing to the communication efforts of the Department of Global Communication.

Job purpose

The Public Information Officer is responsible for overseeing and producing high-quality information products and multimedia content for UN Geneva. This includes editing meeting summaries, press releases, and social media content to ensure accuracy, clarity, and adherence to UN standards. The role involves developing and implementing communication campaigns, providing expert advice on public affairs and editorial matters, and building strategic partnerships. The officer will also represent the UN in meetings, deliver presentations, organize events, and manage publications to inform and engage external audiences effectively, aligning with the Department of Global Communications' priorities and promoting UN activities and issues.

Responsibilities

Oversee and edit UN human rights treaty body summaries, Human Rights Council proceedings, press briefings, press releases, and other information products for accuracy, clarity, and adherence to UN editorial standards. Develop and deliver high-impact multimedia content for social media platforms, providing editorial guidance and ensuring alignment with departmental priorities. Plan, develop, and implement communication campaigns, working with various entities to integrate campaign messages. Provide expert advice on public affairs, editorial, and communications issues, and resolve related problems. Develop strategic partnerships to enhance promotional objectives. Prepare, draft, and edit diverse outreach products. Evaluate the impact of communication activities and report on UN-related developments. Represent the UN in meetings, deliver presentations, and organize public events. Build information networks and manage the publications program. Assist in unit operations, including coordination, policy dissemination, and training. May coordinate and mentor public information staff. Collect and analyze data for insights and reporting. Serve as officer-in-charge in the absence of the Chief of Section.

Education

An advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration, or a related field is required. A first-level university degree with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted.

Work experience

A minimum of seven years of progressive experience in public information, journalism, international relations, or public administration is required. Experience in editing and developing communications for intergovernmental bodies, translating complex policy into accessible content, and managing social media strategy and content is essential. Supervisory experience is desirable.

Professionalism, Communication, Planning & Organizing, knowledge of public information and communication aspects, ability to analyze data, conceptualize and implement campaigns, diplomatic handling of sensitive situations, strong writing and oral presentation skills, ability to manage time and resources effectively.
