Composite Indicator Research Section, Department for Economics and Data Analytics, IP and Innovation Ecosystems Sector

Place of internship: Geneva, Switzerland

Expected duration: 6 months with the possibility of renewal

Expected start date: January 4, 2027

1. Organizational Context

The WIPO Internship Program provides an opportunity for interns to complement their educational experience and develop their professional skills and competencies through work participation in an international context. Learning through experience and exposure, together with feedback from the intern’s supervisor and colleagues, play a major role in achieving these objectives. In addition, learning opportunities in the form of structured courses and programs may be provided to the intern during the internship.

This internship is hosted by the Composite Indicator Research Section, Department for Economics and Data Analytics (DEDA), IP and Innovation Ecosystems Sector (IES).

(a) Organizational Setting

The intern will work under the supervision of the Head of the Composite Indicator Research Section, DEDA, IES.

(b) Reporting Lines

The intern will work under the supervision of the Head of the Composite Indicator Research Section, DEDA, IES.

2. Objectives

During the internship, the intern will:

  • Apply substantive knowledge of economics, statistics and data analytics in the field of economic publications and policymaking;
  • Benefit from technical supervision and mentoring;
  • Obtain experience working in a United Nations (UN) common system organization.
3. Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Head of the Composite Indicator Research Section, the intern will contribute to the work on the Global Innovation Index (GII) as well as the work on measuring investment in intangible assets. In particular, the intern’s tasks will include the following:

  • Providing analytical inputs and contributing to the production of two reports: the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2027 and the World Intangible Investment Highlights (WIIH) 2027;
  • Providing support for data visualization and preparation of content for social media and the WIPO website under editorial guidance;
  • Assisting with the organization of various events related to the two publications, including preparing presentations, talking points and related background materials;
  • Performing other related tasks as required, such as logistical and administrative support (e.g., drafting invitations, coordinating event logistics).
4. Requirements
  • Advanced university degree (master's degree) in economics, data science or related field.

Experience (Essential)

  • Experience in using specialized software and programming languages for statistical/econometric analysis (in particular R and/or Python).

Specific skills and competencies (Essential)

  • Familiarity with modern data visualization tools with interest in developing these skills further.

Specific skills and competencies (Desirable)

  • Knowledge of/experience with applied economics and/or innovation economics.
  • Experience in drafting content for social media and web use.
  • Sound judgement and integrity.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Excellent written and spoken knowledge of English.
  • Knowledge of any other official UN languages would be an advantage.

6. Eligibility: For this category, only the following individuals are eligible:
Category II Internship:
  • a) Individuals pursuing their first advanced university degree who have completed their coursework, but not the final thesis; or
  • b) Individuals who have obtained their first advanced university degree and who are pursuing a subsequent university degree; or
  • c) Individuals who have obtained their most recent advanced university degree less than two years from the date of the internship application.
7. Stipend

The selected candidate will receive a monthly stipend of 2,170 Swiss francs, and will be provided medical insurance, annual leave and sick leave benefits.

Note: The stipend amount is for a full-time internship (40 hours per week). The internship is for a minimum duration of 6 months, renewable up to a maximum of 12 months. It will take place at WIPO’s headquarters, in Geneva, Switzerland, and it cannot be carried out remotely.
